2002 Bali bombings
I utfs and i ended up with cannibalism and stabalization
so i guess i can post this question about the bombings...
I searched a couple of hours on the net and got intrigued
about the wide spread speculations about the device used
in the largest blast.
Offical sources state it was a van with several hundred
pounds of potassium chlorate with added aluminum powder
and some tnt boosters and PETN detcord
In a google preview of the book "Trace chemical sensing of exlosives" author mr Woodfin states it was a van packed
with 1000 kg of chlorate flash powder
Yet another source is talking about a mini nuke
do any of you guys have an idea based upon some
the pictures of the blast area what may have caused
this?
grtz

I really couldn't give a shit what it was and I don't know why it should matter---and why you'd want to know is the only thing that
bothers me. . .

I think this thread should be moved to the Energetic Materials forum.

Is this actually a nuclear weapon or a dirty bomb (chemical explosive spreads radioactive isotopes)?

Official sources say about a tonne of KClO3-Al-S with TNT booster-initiator, early estimates were for 50 to 150 kilo of the same.
http://www.terrorismcentral.com/Library/terroristgroups/Jema...
A mini-nuke is whatever you want it to be. Actual small nuclear weapons produced or tested by the U.S. and U.S.S.R. were steamer trunk size devices,
and had adjustable yields in the 1 to 10 kiloton range. The smallest device tested, but never put in production, had a yield of around 0,2 kiloton.
Such a device would leave something much large than a 1 meter deep crater, and a radioactive signature that would have been picked up around the
world.
Much of the chatter about mininukes is speculation fueled by scam artists from the former Soviet Union. Some try to sell "nuclear materials", some
try to sell "secret data and plans", while other attempt to find comfortable new careers by talking about the existence of such devices. Fortunately
for the last group The U.S.A exists and is famous for snapping up anything that talks about how incredibly dangerous the USSR is/was. This goes back
to Gehlen and his Organization, which in working for the USA consistently produced reports on Soviet strength far in excess of reality and of what was
known to other Western intelligence gathering, and was frequently mislead and compromised by Communist agents. It did, however, discover
СМЕРШ, and successfully sheltered hundreds of ex-Nazis from war crimes trial.

I guess i wanted to say that you can't stop these things from happening;
Whether it is an army thats going to war or some individuals
or even a single individual in essence there's no difference.
