Have you tried deleting "Adobe Updater", or removing it from the "Adobe Utilities" folder?

Or switch to Foxit Reader. Reads PDFs just fine, and seems to load them a lot faster than Acrobat Reader. No update requests either. Only downside I've seen is
that if you're using Firefox, it opens Foxit as an external reader, rather than opening PDFs inside the browser. But that's a trivial thing.Darkblade48 - 11-11-2007 at 14:37
I'm not sure if this is the same in Acrobat Reader (I have Acrobat Pro), but...
Go to Edit > Preferences. Look for an Updates option; from there, you can choose to disable the downloading of any updates.chemrox - 11-11-2007 at 20:42

Hmmmm... I've got a Mac, looks like you have something else
The file I am talking about is "Adobe Updater" it's an application. I guess on a Windows PC it would be an .exe file. I am thinking that even if you
removed it you would then get an error message saying "file not found".
Edit: I have Adobe Reader 8.0. If you select "Help" and click on "Check for updates..." It runs Adobe Updater you should get a splash screen which is
"Updater Preferences", untick the "Automatically check for Adobe updates".
