Essential Oils

MJ101 - 2-8-2018 at 08:15

I've been reading posts since I got here, in the hopes that I could find some chemistry that I could safely do. I live in the middle of Brooklyn, New York, and my concern is the safety of myself as well as my neighbors.

So I've began looking at gathering glassware for essential oil production.

After reading this PDF
http://www.engineering.iastate.edu/brl/files/2011/10/brl_ess...

I started by looking on Amazon for glassware. This is what I found.

https://www.amazon.com/Essential-Distillation-Apparatus-Allh...

Please let me know what you think in terms of what they offer, and if I'd be better off just buying the glassware one piece at a time.

Thanks in advance... :)

check out deschem and sam10086 on ebay. They both have cheap high-quality glass, you can get a much better deal than that amazon link. This: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Essential-Oil-Steam-Distillation-Ap... is the same product as the amazon one except cheaper. Assuming you just want to do distillation and you don't already have a hot plate or anything this is a decent choice, a good chunk of the money for this is going to the hot plate. Check the description of this one for the names of all the individual glass.

If you already have a heat source, you can get a lot more glass for cheaper, like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/24-40-New-Organic-Chemistry-Laborat... for example.

If you buy each of the pieces separately you may get a better deal but make sure you get the same size, 24/40 being the most common and 24/29 is not a bad choice either.

@solinium: Thanks for your reply.

Part of me wants to buy both items. :)

That would give me enough glassware and equipment to do proper experiments. I may have to "trade up" on the heating mantle,
getting something with stirring built in.

Now I need to start researching, and find out what can be distilled and how.
