From time to time there are questions dealing with analytical chromatography techniques such as TLC. I just ran across the attached paper which uses
silica doped filter paper as an analytical chromatography technique. The procedure for making the material seems relatively straightforward and easily
carried out in the home lab. All the materials required are easily available. Experimenting with the silica doped filter paper as a general method for
"TLC" would make a very good project for the home chemist. The results of such a study could be widely and generally useful. It would also provide an
option to the quite expensive commercial silica gel TLC plates. Hopefully someone is up to the challenge. Perhaps this would be a good undergraduate
research project?
Have a look.
