Stabilizer for benzaldehyde

Lefaucheux10 - 2-3-2017 at 01:22

Hi,

Can i use some BHT (dibutylhydroxytoluene ) to prevent the oxidation of benzaldehyde in the acid ?

How much should i use ?

thank

I don't think an anti-oxidant is needed for benzaldehyde as long as you keep it in an air tight container(If the container is not air tight to start with,it becomes one after a few days because the stopper will get jammed due to some of the benzaldehyde oxidising to benzoic acid;) )

2 years ago i test a stock of benzaldehyde for peroxyde and it was positive !

surprising but these is the reality benzaldehyde can form peroxyde....

good bottle is an evidence for benzaldehyde and tape arround the cap too

But BHT may not have as good a redox potential as BHT, so I'm not sure that it would really protect benzaldehyde. The main oxidation product is benzoic acid, which will form readily upon exposure to air. I have never seen any commercial aldehyde with BHT present, so I doubt it is that useful. BHT is mostly used for ethers and some other air sensitive compounds that form peroxides, but none that I am aware of oxidize to acids.

Almost any antioxidant will work.

Is there something I might be missing

'Hydroquinone is the most active anti-oxidant for benzaldehyde'................
https://books.google.de/books?id=bKIrDgAAQBAJ&pg=PA188&a...

'Thiourea is therefore somewhat over twelve times as effective as hydroquinone ' when used as an antioxidant on benzaldehyde............

Hmmm.................
