I wasn't quite sure how to title this, so I figured I'd go for pink floyd lyrics... Anyway, I have a five page paper due on friday for my bio class.
The assignment is to pick a drug, any drug, and write about its effects and side effects. The problem is, I have no idea what to write about. I was
thinking about an anticholinergic, but I don't think I could wrap it up in under ten pages.
Anyone have an idea for an interesting drug that'll wrap up nicely? Or a class of drugs that might have a hidden gem? I'll pick the best Idea I find

Good choices (intentionally avoiding illicit pharmies):
Lidocaine: Prodrug was cocaine (so, an interesting story), most typical synthesis used in most college organic labs.
Prozac: Possibly the largest blockbuster; you could discuss side effects including...suicidal tendencies and erectile disfunction.
Disulfuram: A dithiocarbamate used for detoxing alcoholics--renders alcohol dehydrogenase ineffective. Result, barfing drunk for days.
Physostigmine: A deadly toxic AChE inhibitor (anti-cholinergic) derived from Physostigma Venenosa (I think) which is used as an antidote for
atropine/scopalomine, etc. poisoning. I would go with this one for an AChE inhibitor paper given in most schools (does not pack the "nerve gas" vibe).
Thalidomide: Cause of phocomelia in infants when given to european mothers to quell morning sickness (only one stereoisomer does this; it was served
as a racemate). Now used to treat leprosy, I believe. Fascinating history *and*
wakeup call for the FDA. Also of interest is that the effect only occurs when the drug is adminstered in a narrow gestation window.
Viagra: 'Nuff said. With Cialis, another 'fil, side effects include delayed back pain and muscle stiffness; I thought those were *results* not side
effects.
Naloxone: Opioid antagonist. Used to immediately detox opiate addicts, and to stabilize OD's.
Digoxin: From Foxglove, applied as a cardiotonic. Extremely toxic when applied over the therapeutic titer.
The list goes on-and-on, but, I have to stop somewhere!

Physostigmine sounds interesting...And I'm not worried about writing about the wrong thing, this is a university class - I know its a short paper, but
my professor's got an odd grading system.

If your going for disulfiram, why not also investigate 1 amino cyclopropanol (found in some mushrooms) which has a similar effect. 2 different

I ended up waiting too long to do proper research and had to pick something easier. I ended up doing heroin...I never figured googlebooks would give
me more turn of the century literature than the journals UB subscribes to. Most of the good research stopped around 1924, but the oldest journal
article I was able to find on it was from the 1960's...
