Host for several of my files? Maybe yours too?

Yes, Polverone, FTP's and P2P graciously host some of my and others' stuff, but I'm daring to be different.

Thought that I would mention 4shared.com if it hasn't already come up, and present an opportunity to test it. Of course the desirable features aren't free, and possibly other sites are better for paid service of this sort. I make no claim that it is great or whatever, it is what it is. We all know how things go, especially free internet service things.

If anyone sees anything that they want to download but has problems, let us know; this is a test. I don't yet know if it deletes inactive files, but it does delete inactive accounts. Uploading multiple files is a Yahoo-like pain in the ass and only possible for the first 5 days for free, they say. So don't expect to see any Rhodium pdf archive-type uploading, not as loose pdf's. Only 1 file can be downloaded at a time, either as one person on different files, or as multiple people trying to download the same file. It looks at IP's, but it appears that it is only a problem during downloads, so there is no hourly/daily limit problem. AFAIK. Yet. There are multiple folder permissions that can be set as with FTP, and this is the only free service that I've looked at that has this. So no one without a password will be uploading or deleting anything in any of these folders.

All of my book scans are there, and several alternate versions; so this link shouldn't be too popular. There are at present some other documents there that I've associated myself with; i.e. PEP, but most things that I've posted here which aren't my book scans aren't there yet (if ever). There is still 335 MB free in that account. There are several other documents (often in German) created by others that should look familiar to those with FTP access. They're there because they're good. Some liberties have been taken in changing file names to give a uniform naming system. The file names may have to be changed again on the chance that you download them, depending on what you want to do with the files.

If it works out, my future work will get uploaded to my folder there without warning. I see no reason why 4shared wouldn't evolve like rapidshare has, as long as the technical and business aspects work. And as long as they don't go on a mad porn/warez/infringement tear. Wishful thinking that. The free size used to be lower, it might keep getting bigger.

Perhaps members who have a habit of posting articles, etc. below 50 MB to rapidshare, etc. could create and upload to a free member account or possibly to a collective one if it seems worthwhile. Are we interested and organized enough? Is there a need? I've considered uploading all of my saved articles to an article account, with each journal getting a different folder. But there are way too many; and even if I could upload folders as with FTP, they are currently organized by reaction type. But future articles?

Rapidshare has long since been a 'no no' for me because of IP ban which appears to affect the entire area here. Proxy's are a solution, but very very slow and a pain in the ass.
This however - beautiful download speed, great articles, downloading successively - again thank you! I wasn't aware of all the PEP articles, there are many interesting ones!

maybe we could set up a public g-mail account for that, just give the pass to everybody that is trustable (i.e. oldest members only like 500+ post) and put there files that need archiving? just send a mail from the adress to the same adress with the name of the article in the topic, should do the job.

The uploading of multiple files has been changed to be easier, and this is a free feature. It still doesn't allow uploading of folders, you have to create an empty folder and ctrl+a to it instead.

I finally noticed that three of the files were never downloaded, this is because downloads of files with naughty names such as "analytical" or "Cumming" (Cummins, Cuming, cucumber, Cumberland...?) are not allowed. They have been _enamed via the rename function. Hopefully anyone who downloads one of these will change the file back to put an end to this silliness.

F***ing unbelievable! I suspected 4shared looked just too cool to be true. I checked the files on my account that have 0 downloads and when attempting to download it says "The file is suspected of illegal or copyrighted content. Please contact link publisher or use our search engine to find a file or folder…"
The thing is that even when I renamed the file and the "offending" word it still refused download due to same reason. How could this be? Does their software check the content of the PDF files or the document properties?

Your analogues/analogs haven't been renamed on the link that I get. No way anything anal is going to work. The renaming function worked instantly for me, it was just the name of the file that caused the problem you describe. You wouldn't think that porn would be such a problem with a 50 MB file limit, or that porn would be so hard to work around in this same manner. The 4shared people/person are not geniuses, but then again not many are.

How embarrassing! It was an anal* thing. And I thought the offending word was "amphetamine". :D
I either removed the word "analogues" or changed it to "an_logues" and now the files are downloadable. In my opinion the 4shared server is too anal about porn. :P

Yes, their software (and that of Rapidshare) keeps a record, including especially file size and source code (or at least a sample of it early in the file), as well as the file-names, of all files reported to them by malicious narks as being allegedly in breach of copyright (without any proof). In the case of Rapidshare (who delete such files as "forbidden to be shared" (sic)), they use this data for comparison with incoming files, the uploading of which is prevented if there is a "positive match"; while in the case of 4shared, the data is used to prevent the downloading of such positively-matched files (and may very well also prevent such files from being reuploaded by anyone).

The Adobe Corporation seems to be very bad in this regard - they employ a full-time team of narks, who trawl the internet on commission for postings of links to uploads of not only their programs but also for ebooks about their programs, even if the ebooks are from other publishers. The narks may even be "silent" members of Sciencemadness.org, who would be characterized by having made very few or no posts in a long period of membership.

To get around this, you need to change both the size and source code of each "forbidden" file, and render it unreadable to them if in a compressed archive, by compressing the file in a ZIP or RAR archive, and encrypting this with a password which you will also need to post in the password-protected References section to Sciencemadness members along with the link. If it is already in a ZIP or RAR compressed archive, extract it, then recompress it in a RAR archive with password if it was originally in a ZIP archive, or in a ZIP archive with password if it was originally in a RAR archive, so as to change the extension.

That reminds me: I have uploaded to Rapidshare.com about 10 ebooks about Adobe Photoshop, but I am reluctant to share them here on an open forum, because of the possibility that Adobe's narks will see the links and inform on them to Rapidshare (who would delete them as "forbidden to be shared"). So, to avoid this, I will give the links only PRIVATELY to those members who have made at least 20 good posts (which I shall examine) on Sciencemadness.org and who contact me either here, or by U2U message or by email, to request them.

Previously I had downloaded a few smaller files from 4shared but more recently I downloaded many larger files (10 leight recent volumes of of Angew.Chem.) Maybe a GB worth.

I would say it is the least offensive such system I have encountered.

However, it is not without its warts.

Too many hoops to jump through. I input the PW to get to the main directory, click on file I want. That gets me a screen full of ads, and in about a minute a link appears. I click on that and I get another screen full of ads with a PW prompt. I key in the PW again, I get screen full of ads, and eventually a link. Click that and finally I get the dialog box for download.

This appears to be optimized to keep the adverts in my face for 3-4 minutes at a stretch.

This happens every time every file. So for 40 files that is 120-160 minutes of twiddling my thums with their adverts on screen, and this does not include download time (which I do minimized.)

Again, this is better than rapidshare, and I can't even comment on some others which won't work for me at all.

Furthermore at certain times of day/night 4shared tells me "all ports assigned to your country are busy, come back and try again in a few hours or buy Premium download." Grrrrr. However if I persist 6-12 times eventually I get in without waiting for hours, this is annoying.

THIS is why I take what I get this way and upload it to MadHatter so that if I ever need to download again I won't have to suffer through these petty purgatories again. And neither will others who have MadHatter access. I have now uploaded vols 37-44 to UPLOAD?Sauron/ and I thank @kmno4 for his kindness in making these available. The sins of 4shared are not his sins. I make no complaint to him.

What happens when I hit the download icon:
A new tab opens immediately.
the "Loading file info. Please wait... Don't like waiting?" thing changes into "download file" in 5-15 seconds.
When that is clicked on, the download starts within 5 seconds.

The maximum free file size is now 100 MB, and it gives you 5 GB of space.

It banned another one of my scans, because of the author name. It was by Bates and Schaefer. Oh, masturbates? Like Cumming? Or analytical? Analysis is OK for some reason btw.

How really annoying. Is it necessary to use that service? Would it be that big an issue to use a little more bandwidth and post a compressed file? Or is there a file share service not so bloody PC?

This is obviously going to take some time. My partner over at RS has agreed to setup a
website to enable rapid downloading. We've already tested with download speeds as high
as 600 KB/sec. My partner, tmp, as you know him at RS has refused access to the site until
the uploading is complete. Right now if you go to his site:

With a dash of luck and serious uploading the website will be operational within a couple
of months. He won't allow me access until the specifications meets his approval. Who am I
