I would like to find a safer substitute for triethylamine in a basic analysis. I only need a small amount for balancing Ph. But, I don't feel like
taking unnecessary risk, and don't have a fume hood. I suspect that TEOA will be not be useful and need to avoid reactivity with phosphoric acid in
methanol. Could anyone give me a suggestion?

Triethylamine is not very harmful, you definitely don´t need a fume hood when you are working with it.
Especially if you only want to use small quantities of it.
It is really not that bad, also not that smelly. Don´t worry, before you find a good substitute you should just use triethylamine.

I guess I will accept your advice on this one. Having a little TEA on hand might be nice anyway. I always thought it could be pretty stinky. But,
finding other uses for it will be fun.
