making semicarbazide

iloveloli - 4-10-2015 at 01:28

i have a idea of making semicarbazide nitrate
but first, i need to make semicarbazide
i see the way that using urea and Hydrazine to form semicarbazide in wiki
OC(NH2)2 + N2H4 → OC(NH2)(N2H3) + NH3
is it just adding 80%Hydrazine to urea solution
or i need reflex it for an hour??
also, i see that using semicarbazide and Hydrazine to form carbohydrazide in wiki too
OC(NH2)(N2H3) + N2H4 → OC(N2H3)2 + NH3
is it the same way like making semicarbazide??
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semicarbazide
and then, to 'Tsjerk' thanks for teaching:)

I don't think a whole lot of people are going to reply to your post.

What you are saying would be a lot easier to understand if you would use (trivial) names instead of molecule formulas. Also links to the wiki pages you are revering to would be nice, it makes it a whole lot more likely people will have a look and then maybe respond.

Mhm....there seem to be several ways to make it. Many involve using Nitrourea...don't really like that method.
About your idea from wikipedia. It is made from Hydrazine Hydrate and Urea either heating them for some time
in a sealed tube at 100°C or heating them in a mixture of Ethanol and Butanol, guees reflux with the loss of some yield.

I don't have the time to check the articles reaxys is giving me on this synthesis but I'll copy you the names of the papers which are suggested for this.

It says here for the heating method:

Curtius; Heidenreich
Journal fuer Praktische Chemie (Leipzig), 1895 , vol. <2>52, p. 476
Chemische Berichte, 1894 , vol. 27, p. 2685

And for the Alcohol:

Mistry; Guha
Journal of the Indian Chemical Society, 1930 , vol. 7, p. 794
Chem. Zentralbl., 1931 , vol. 102, # I p. 1438

There are several other ideas on reaxys but I don't really like them. They mostly involve already heaving
a similar compound and then just substitute some functional groups. If you have hydrazine that method
seems better I guess.

Edit:

Please check these papers before doing anything ! The thing above is just what it says here. That doesn't include any steps just a quick draft of what should be done. I think heating that stuff in a sealed tube while ammonia is produced will generate some preassure, too. So please check some articles before doing anything.

That might help, too

I suggest you follow the procedure in Gatterman (1937), in the forum library.
