hi i recently got ammonuim nitrate out of a few cold packs. i tested it by using lye mixed with this an and water and it produced ammonia gas. here is
the thing it produces clumps but when i go to dry it in oven it melts and turns into water again. the oven temp is at 150 degrees F so its not
decomping. why is it doing this? please let me know thanks

It doesn't decompose until well over 200C. You might be looking at either melted ammonium nitrate, or ammonium nitrate dissolved in its own water of
hydration. However, the melting point is 337.3°F, which you are no where near, so I would assume its the latter, in which case keep heating.

There is still too much water present, 10% water and ammonium nitrate forms an eutectic, melting at around 100 deg C. Just needs to dry longer...

ok ill keep heating it boiling out water how long does one boil?

until it's dry, or starts to decompose, then turn off the heat.
No, you can't leave it and go do something else in the meantime.

ok see i boiled it down til it was half its volume 600 ml and then cooled it in freezer to crystallize. i didnt know if an will boil right out with
the water. im new so dont judge me
