sodium methanetetracarboxylate

Anybody has some ideas how to make sodium methanetetracarboxylate without using pentaerythritol? Maybe oxidation of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane?

A couple of Mannich additions w/formaldehyde and NH3 to diethyl malonate followed by oxidation of the resulting 2,2-di(ethoxycarbonyl)-1,3-propanediamine should generate the desired compound.

It would probably be easier to make your own pentaerythritol, depending on availability of acetaldehyde.

oxidation of pinacolone by KMnO4 doesn´t work?
