new to the community

Hello all! Ive been around here and other boards since 2008 (under various names). Im an aspiring amateur chemist hoping to learn and contribute here. Does anyone have any suggested reading on halogens (specifically bromine and astantine, to a lesser extent iodine)? Also any reading ref. on essential oils would be greatly appreciated!

Ello Ello.

Lead Iodide looks wonderful.

Somewhat poisonous, yet looks ace.

Essential oils ? As in steam distilled lavender etc ?

I'll definetly check out lead iodide.

Yeah steam distilled and refined, maybe something applicable for fragrances or soaps perhaps.

Careful with any Lead compounds, or any other heavy metal for that matter.

Besides normal gloves, eye protection, take extra care with the residues (to make them safe for disposal).

For Steam Distillations i got this rig off ebay:-

It was cheaper back then (about a year) and came with a liebig condenser.

Did two steam distillations and then put it in a drawer and forgot about it.

Where are you exactly in Chemistry ?
Total noob, done some stuff, have a Doctorate in Applied Chemistry ?

Just that PbI2 is slightly hazardous, as is Pb(NO3)2 and i would hate to make suggestion that ended up poisoning a newcomer.

I suggested it mostly because it is a beautiful experiment, and i did it (for the first time) recently.

I suggest you look through the titles in the link and spend some time reading Polverone's very excellent free library. Also do some broad all category searching of this site for threads using the keywords you are interested in. You will no doubt find much very useful information.

I've done some stuff (mostly organic chem), not a total noob. I'm continuing my education this upcoming fall semester (ACS approved BS in Chemistry). I took all the offered chem (AP and what not) in high school.

Thank you all kindly for the references, Im a bit of a book worm so Ill gladly read them!!

Sorry about any grammatical errors, I'm a tad lax on my grammar at the moment.
