FREE Online Journals

 Pages:  1

chemoleo - 6-4-2005 at 16:39

Yes, there are many.

However, to get this topic started, have a look at this resource. Many articles are free, and quite interesting, although not necessarily science related -topics are very widely spread. This is the periodicals section (large).. Sadly most of the science related ones are subscription-based. Arggh I just hate it when journals make money on the backs of hard-working scientists - as science is already paid by the tax-payer! Anyway....

Of course, then there is

Gallica - which is mainly French, with German & English tidbits. In particular, have a look at the
periodicals section which contains several wellknown old journals, such as Berichte, The Journal of Phy. Chem.. Most is in French though.

PNAS is a wellknown science/lifescience journal, articles can be viewed for free that are 6 months old or older. Some articles are rather seminal papers.

Feel free to post sources you know of!

This time it's not books, it's Journals, aka periodicals!

You guys forgot BioMed Central?! :o

http://www.biomedcentral.com/

Then again, since its not that related to chemistry...

Hail Open Access Publishing!!!!!!

sparky (^_^)

P.S. And while I'm at it, you can get some neat articles at http://www.arxiv.org and http://citeseer.ist.psu.edu/ , although they are not chemistry related also. :( Physicists and computer scientists here might enjoy, if they don't know about this yet (which I doubt).

Sorry chemoleo, but IOP doesn't offer free access to its articles. I know this because I needed an article from Journal of Physics once, and attempting to retrieve the PDF led me to a login page saying "only registered academic institutions have access". The only way I was able to solve my problem was to e-mail the author of the article I was in need of.

On the right-hand side of the table it says which journals are free. The one you wanted is not.

solo - 7-4-2005 at 06:10

Thime-connect.com offers free 30 days to their list which can be renewed by merely changing your log in name. There are such journals as Synlett and Synthesis, Planta Medica, which are of my interest but please check them out.........solo

sparkgap - 7-4-2005 at 06:20

Didn't notice that. My apologies. :( But this is apparently a recent development. There was no mention of open source on that site quite a while back...

sparky (^_^)

P.S. Thanks also for pointing out that PNAS now allows open access as well; I have now been able to obtain an article that has already taken 4 months to search until now. :D Danke schoen!!!!

The Public Library of Science

chemoleo - 9-4-2005 at 11:32

or, PLoS, is an open access journal focusing primarily on research papers in biology, medicine, computational biology, genetics an pathogens.
I found their ideology interesting.

Down with those science-community-abusing capitalist profit-hungry publishers! :P

Mumbles - 23-4-2005 at 17:36

Ahhhhhhh, when will the good people at google ever cease to make me love them? I found this little gem the other day as I was looking for articles for a psych paper. It doesn't differentiate between the subscription and free, but there were quite a few free ones I found. I didn't get much of a chance to look for any chemsitry goodies. You still get the abstract if you don't have a membership.

The Royal Society of Chemistry offers free access to some of their publications.

Fleaker - 27-7-2005 at 08:39

Affiliation to a university or research institution really helps as they often have complete access to journals and publicatons.

S.C. Wack - 27-7-2005 at 13:02

Guess it should be mentioned here that the first page of all pre-1996 ACS articles are free - in case you need a 1 page article, or another article starts on the second page. The scan quality sucks sometimes but they are usually OCR'd.

More importantly, you can UTFSE there, this includes words in the articles.

Literature For Free

Ozone - 28-7-2005 at 17:53

Hello,

I am currently undertaking a literature survey for my thesis, and have run into this dearth of free literature of which you speak.

Here is a cool thing:Check out Pubmed

A nice Pubmed/Medline tool at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center site:

http://invention.swmed.edu/etblast/etblast.shtml

it will chew through a paragraph, strip out keywords, and send a query to Pubmed.

http://invention.swmed.edu/etblast/user/user-1114702151/resu...

This looks like a useful tool for locating a set of references related to a topic (as long as the articles are in Medline).:)

Additionally, If you are in graduate school, most journals can be accessed directly on-line thourgh the university library website (I think an undergrad student number may work too). This can get you access to just about any ACS publication (lots and lots of great stuff).

ACS (American Chemical Society) membership also comes with a member number that can be used to access archived (back issues) papers from the ACS hosted databases. If you are a chemical professional, your employer will usually cover the annual dues.

Beware of finding the good German literature ante-1946--a lot of it seems to be "missing" hmm--I think that WWII is interfering with my research.

Anyway, I hope that some of this was usefull!

Best of luck,

O3

There's another way around this problem, if you live in a university town. Go to the university library and see if there are public internet terminals. Most universities have them. You can then download all the articles you like (either save them to floppy, or to the desktop and then email them to yourself using your favourite webmail service).

Works for me, anyway.

does anyone have access to acs journals, they are not available online in india

ayush - 13-12-2005 at 07:47

Dear jester,

Which article from which journal of ACS you need? Not only from India, from any where you can not access any secured journals unless you / your Institution is subscribed or use passwords of other authorised subscribers.

If you need article post a request at wanted references thread of this board. Some one will help you.

..... ayush

neutrino - 13-12-2005 at 14:36

Have you tried using google to search acs's site? I remember finding an old article I needed like this, although they might have fixed this by now.

The technique is quite simple. I will U2U it to you and anyone else who asks.

P.S. Wrong thread. You want the one right below this one.

It is obvious from the "wanted refs" thread that some members have access to full texts from ACS. If you have a special request - post it, I can usually get the paper within a couple of hours.

- Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l'Académie des sciences (Compt. Rend.) (1835-1930)
- Berichte der Deutschen chemischen Gesellschaft zu Berlin (Ber. D. Chem. Ges. or simply "Ber.") (1868-1901)

- Proceedings of the Royal society of London (Proc. Roy. Soc.) (1832-1930)
They are available since they are "public domain". This makes that only the OLD issues are available, not the new high-tech editions.
However, SWiM finds them most interesting.... ;) Also, think twice before you start downloading all volumes. Speed isn't great, transfers
are often interrupted and ftp access is not 24/7. However, if you are not a computer n00b, you'll find alternatives... :)

No one seems to have mentioned this one:

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

Looks like there are a lot of issues, available as PDFs mostly in English.

This was published by Blackwell Scientific and by CRC in 1991, and is currently out-of-print. It appears to be an important advanced undergraduate and Masterate textbook. Because of its publication date, it may have never been released in electronic form, meaning that someone would have to scan it to files.

Acta Chimica Slovenica

There are a lot of free issues in english language (1998-2006):
http://acta.chem-soc.si/issues.html

JohnWW - 22-9-2006 at 01:49

I read today in the latest issue of the British New Scientist magazine that the Royal Society Of The UK has opened up its journals, its Proceedings Of The Royal Society, which go back 400 years. The folder containing this archive of issues of the Proceedings Of The Royal Society is:

http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/archive

or, according to another source,

http://www.pubs.royalsoc.ac.uk/index.cfm?page=1373

They include the original papers by Newton, Halley, Maxwell, and other mostly British scientists. The archive will be open for two months from 14th September.

Yes, mods read this thread too but we don't trim dead links. Far too many links are posted on this board for us to monitor them all and remove them when they've expired.

Aldrichemica Acta is the house organ of Aldrich Chemical Co., who need no introduction.

You can subscribe for free is you are a registered user of their website (also free) and they have forty years of back volumes online.

These are in pdf and can be downloaded issue by issue, there is an index of articles.

For convenience I have collected all forty volumes and loaded then in several <50 Mb zip archives on 4shared.com so you can have these on CD or on hard disk or in a flash ram drive or whatever.

There is a lot of good chemistry in there.

Enjoy!

Here is a pdf version of the complete index to date of articles in Volumes 1 through Vol 40 #2, this file is also in the 4shared.com folder

how you not know what your own computer is downloading??? no organization?
total size for these should be about 5.3 GB
total files almost 15000

how can use these if you havent organized them? theres no ocr text.

Then there is a problem, since number of PDFs are about 45000 and size is 16.7 GB. I think I shall figure out what is what after if the damn thing stops.

You're probably downloading the abstracts along with other *.PDFs that might be several links deep. That's an annoying problem with site downloaders. You should adjust your settings to match the site you are currently downloading from.

Which program are you using?

The classical, HTTrack. I had to stop it. The thing has shown little activity for a few days, although now and then something is downloaded.

It seems to have jumped to other (university) sites too. Now I cancelled it, cleaned the garbage, rar'ed and now uploading to FTP. :D

I hope I did a good job. Regards.

MagicJigPipe - 22-5-2008 at 21:47

Please provide the location of the file and which FTP as there appear to be thousands of folders/directories on the MadHatter FTP which makes it difficult to find anything specific without searching for hours.

I wish there was some sort of standard organization on that FTP that prevented duplicates and "orphan" files from being ALL OVER THE PLACE. I swear, probably 1/5 of my files from that FTP are the same file just in different folders and/or compressed files.

Don't get me wrong, it's great that the FTP exists, but it could be much more organized. Perhaps someone with full permissions could do some "rearranging". I would be happy to do it as I am basically having to do the same thing on my own computer. Also, another thing is standard file names. I probably have 10 different copies of Vogel and/or Brauer and hundreds of the same article because of filenames like "2383274902.pdf", "VIIEd.3&fh.rar", "VIIEd.3*fh.djvu", "JACS83838383839292910293019.rar" etc...

I propose that we do something about it.

gsd - 23-5-2008 at 03:19

Download the file "FILELIST.TXT" ( this file is in the root directory) from the madatter FTP.
It is current upto 23/03/2008.

It has complete listing of directories / subdirectories / files. (But no description. Only file names.)

It gives fairly good idea of ftp content.

They are on MatHatter's FTP under UPLOAD\AkinRog\

However, I cannot reach to MatHatter so he can test / verify the integrity of files (169 split archive rars). He is working two jobs a day, I believe he cannot get my PM.

If he cannot do this, I shall be glad if somebody (with FTP account and fast connection of course) download and check their integrity.

akinmad - 24-5-2008 at 17:05

An update on issue.

MatHatter checked the split rar archive and found it corrupt, so I'm uploading the files manually one by one again.

Regards

akinmad - 18-6-2008 at 06:22

Another update.
Since the size and number of files are absurdly large, I had to clean the duplicate ones.

After that the number of files is about 24.000 and size is about 9 GB.

However, I could not upload them to the same folder, since server refuses to put them in the same folder if number of files is above a certain number.

They are in the FTP under UPLOAD\AkinRog\Canadian Chemical Society 1\ and UPLOAD\AkinRog\Canadian Chemical Society 2\ folders.

Sorry for the delay. Regards.

Downloading it from this FTP is only 30KB/s, from original site is much quicker and uploaded PDFs are not compressed. 1-st PDF has 526KB, the same one but compressed has only 110 KB, 2-nd has 1,97 MB, compressed one 375 KB.... etc.
In my opinion (sorry), it is loosing the time and disc space to download this journal from MadHatter's FTP.

Thank you for the constructive (sic) criticism (as always). It's your choice. Regards.

Sauron - 31-10-2008 at 20:43

Disk space is cheap. Anyway I put such archives on DVDs that are even cheaper and less perishable than HDDs.

A waste of time? How exactly is time a factor in a multitasking environment?

Who is to guarantee that this journal will always be open access as it is now?

No one.

I'd rather have it on my desktop. Or on a DVD second away from my desktop.

It would have been better had these files been compressed, but it's a bit much to ask our benefactor to redo them now.

I just downloaded volume 1 from FTP as a test. Painless. Now I will go see if I can use my usual tool (Acrobat Pro's pdf from website) to snag volume 2. I don't have HTTrack.

Acrobat is chewing on volume 2, presently at 30-something Mb and p 450 or so out of 950 something. I set the applet to 2 levels down, Stay on same path and Stay on same server. Hopefully it won't try to download the djvu files. So far only pdf.

Obviously using Acrobat to get the TOC as a pdf is a good idea even if you take the actual files from FTP.

I do not see any big difference in download time. Both sets of files are uncompressed.

Acrobat Pro worked fine with the settings mentioned, ignored the djvus, and compiled Volume 2 as a single large pdf, with working links from the TOC to the PDF papers.

So I recommend this method.

kmno4 - 1-11-2008 at 17:44

Downloading from FTP: ~50 KB/s
Downloading from original site: ~115 KB/s (120 is max. for my internet connection).
For me time is the most important factor, besides I prefer to have as many files as possible on given 'space' (HDD or DVD). Especially in the case of DVD: better 2 discs than 6 discs per journal.
Volume 12 has 200 MB, compressed: 37 MB. So you have to download (and upload) 160 MB of "nothing".

You are right: no one can guarantee that it is free for ever, but up to now it is. Synthesis and Synlett used to be available for free too :(.

Sauron - 1-11-2008 at 22:42

MadHatter's server is on the other side of the Atlantic from you, the Acta server is not. Both are on the other side of the planet from me, and I am really not seeing all that much difference in transfer rate.

However I am downloading from the Acta site volume by volume using Acrobat Pro. It takes 2 hours per volume, about, with the volumes running 75-140 Mb. But I get them as a single pdf with working links from TOC and I like that. Akinrog's have no toc, you can add the toc off the net but no links.

I do not see the relevance of "compressed" as neither the folders on FTP nor the volumes from the Acta site are compressed. Where are they available compressed? If what you are saying is that akinrog ought to have post processed them, you are right.

Acrobat does this for me in the background, and requires no attention from me until a volume is complete and I have a few mouse clicks to start another one. Once every couple hours. Meanwhile I can proceed with whatever else I want to do on the PC or on the net, like writing this post. That's task switching, or multitasking if you don't want to be too finicky about the term. I could and in fact did download volume 1 from FTP while downloading volume 2 from Acta site.

I think this will fit on 2 DVDs. I jave JOC on 2 and I&EC on 2 and this isn't any larger than those, I reckon. But if it takes 3, so what?

Sauron - 7-11-2008 at 07:30

I am at halfway point in terms of volumes of Acta Chemica Scandinavica downloaded (26 of 53) but this does not tell the full story. The volumes have grown to 400 Mb each so I am lucky to get 2-3 of them a day now. If this trend continues the volumes will be 500 Mb. So perhaps kmno4 was right.

However, in for a penny, in for a pound. Might as well soldier on.

Starting with Volume 28, the volumes are divided into two parts A and B and the page count for both is back to about 3000 which ought to be "only" 300 Mb, which is better than 400 and way better than 500!. I'll report on how long this lasts.

[Edited on 8-11-2008 by Sauron]

Sauron - 8-11-2008 at 04:45

Further to Acta Chem.Scand.

The A and B volumes go from volume 28 to volume 42 (1974-1988) then revert to unitary volumes again. I have not surveyed the total Mb count of these volumes, but will find out the hard way.

Sauron - 11-11-2008 at 05:45

Volumes 28-42 of Acta Chem Scand average just a little over 200 Mb each, these are the ones divided into 2 files each a and B that evarge c.100 Mb each.

I am presently on volume 36 of total 53.

The bad news is that while the TOCs work, sort of, they as of volume 28 do not work as expected or as volumes 1-28 do.

I am trying to figure out how to correct thia.

Sauron - 12-11-2008 at 23:48

Volumes 28 and later of Acta Chem Scand can after all be downloaded and compiled as single pdf files using Adobe Acrobat Pro's Create PDF from Web Page function, and the links in TOC will call the pdfs locally, while djvu documents will be downloaded from an active Internet connection if any.

Set the switches in dialog box to two laters down and do NOT check Stay on same server, and Stay on same Path.

Volumes 1-27 are unaffected by those last two switches.

I downloaded HTTrack but for me, Adobe Acrobat Pro looks like it does the job exactly the way I want. HTTrack looks like it would be faster but has a steep learning curve.

In Adobe is you leave the default 1 level down alone you will get only the TOC and all pdf's as well as djvu files will be called from Internet. While this does work, if the server is ever taken down or the archives removed or pw-protected there will be no access. Having them locally is better.

Sauron - 16-11-2008 at 23:17

I had a look at akinmad/akinrog's Canadian J.Chem. folder on MadHatter in UPLOADS.

Am I wrong, or is this just a jumble of pdf's of single papers from 1951-2008, and with useless, meaningless titles RPViewDoc.......pdf No volume, no page number, no year, no seperate folders for year/volume, much less issue, and in no order!

In short unless one is willing to go through thousands of pdf's manually and figure out the bibliographic information, THIS IS USELESS AND A WASTE OF TIME, STORAGE AND ATTENTION.

I have tried getting into the cnrc site with Adobe Acrobat Pro and is IS possible to create a pdf with TOC but only for one issue at a time. I have a sample pdf for Vol 29 issue 1 January 1951. However this is not a practical approach for almost 60 years of a journal.

Is anyone planning to snag this journal and do it right?

Or is there some trick to getting what akinrog has done into useful and usable form?

I tried posting Volume 29 Issue 1 that I assembled from the CNRC site, but it is too large for the forum hosting. The canucks do not crop their scans so there is a lot of wasted white space, and I do not feel like cropping all those pages just to make a point.

Here is the complete TOC with working links for Volume 29 numbers 1-12. Once I have the huge pile of pdf's that akinmad dumped, I will try to append the links in this to call them from the local path rather than the Net. Acrobat Pro has such a global append link function though I have never used it before. We will see.

If this works then it is a "relatively" trivial task of a few days grunt work to compile TOCs volume by volume, issue by issue. 46 volumes x 12 issues each...boring but it will work.

30 min later: OK I now know how to automate the toc process, so it will be 1/12th the effort. The main hassle is that before Acrobat Pro sucks in the issue by issue toc's it takes in 284 pages of garbage pages just dripping with maple leaves forever. Bureaucracy! Well, 284 pages delete as easily as 1.

The resulting volume toc is in reverse order, Number 12 to Number 1 but that is not a nuisance. You access them via index not serially.

Have a nice downloading.....:P

Sauron - 18-11-2008 at 10:58

I have abandoned efforts to download the archive of these accursed Can J Chem articles from MadHatter.

It now appears that the only way to get these volumes in an organized form is to snag them one issue at a time, 12 issues per volume, with Acrobat Pro which is reasonably fast and easy with the right settings (arrived at by trial and error). The resulting pdf's contain a lot of superfluous Canadian govt garbage which I just delete; when that is done there are only the TOC with links to the pdf's internal to the document and accessible at a mouse click.

I reckon I can get through 1-2 volumes in a 12 hr day without strain so in about 3 weeks I ought to be done.

There are NOT 28,000 chemical papers involved. Maybe 1/10th of that. The rest is Canadian bureaucratic bilge. I have a feeling that by the time I am done with this I will truly hate the maple leaf.

these are the english transalated articles by Springer
they were recently announced as free for a limited time
I got them, now free for unlimited time :-)

index pages look like ACS archives because I used same script to mkae them :-)

Sauron - 18-11-2008 at 20:00

@gsd

The one who is wasting the forum's time is akinmad. I am not the only one who has called attention to the fact that his so called contribution to MadHatter is worse than useless. Such warning may prevent the unwary from going through the same frustrations I have experienced.

I completed my Acta Chem Scand archive, now on 3 DVDs (yes I know you disapprove, but I could care less.) There is no need for me to upload them because kmno4 did a better job.

I now have the first volume of Can J Chem (29, 1951) done in 12 pdf's with TOCs (the originals) and all the Canadian crap removed. It will take some time to get all the volumes. Weeks, anyway. I will upload them to the UPLOADS/Sauron folder as they are finished.

Alter, if you got those files from akinmad/akinrog, they are jumbled with articles from Canadian journals other than CJC. I ran across several in his "archive" from other CNRC journals.

alter - 18-11-2008 at 21:13

I downloaded canadian journals myself

others try to use simple tools and get too many files or not all of them, I have seen this before

for my real results: beautifulsoup + md5 + urllib + tor + silx + multivalent + programming

others use toys like httrack, downthemall, webcopier. ok for some things but I never see good journal archive from them.

Sauron - 18-11-2008 at 21:36

Well, alter, good for you! Personally I do not care for HTTrack, nor ReGet. You are using a workstation and most of your software is unfamiliar to me. Be that as it may.

But I find that with a little experimentation, Acrobat Pro works on this journal, issue by issue only, and after a wee bit of editing out the government garbage, a good working pdf with TOC same as the website for the issue, and nothing else but the pdf's scans, results. It does not take a great deal of time to process 12 issues, and there are only 47 volumes available this way. Today I will put samples up on my 4shared account and post link here. In a few days I will start uploading volume by volume to MadHatter.

There are no extraneous files and no missing files. What is in the original TOCs is all present.

This is not a competition. I was already into this before you posted that you were working on it. I queried kmno4 about whether or not he intended to do this and he did not deign to reply so I went ahead. Life's a bitch.

Anyone can do the same. CJC is open access, and some would dispute the wisdom of bothering to compile this archive in that light. Not I. What the government gives the government can damn well take away.

So best of luck to you, and thanks for all your excellent work.

Why would I be bothered whether you store files on DVDs or floppies or on anything else? You don't seem to remember issues on which YOU pick up fights with other members (BTW ever pondered why is it always YOU against somebody else?). All I can conclude you don't remember what ( and probably why) you posted few days/ posts ago.

Well good luck and happy posting! (concerns and sensibilities of other members be damned :))

Bullshit. Just stay out of my way, and I will ignore you. You are after all eminently ignorable.

I bet that something is wrong with alter's collection.

It is possible in Acrobat to set the Create PDF From Web Page to take in only PDFs, and even then only Adobe-format PDFs. In this case all the "trash" html will be ignored but unfortunately also the TOC which is HTML.

Sy setting the depth to 1 level one can get just the TOC and could therefore have two PDFs to splice back together, one the TOC and one the article PDFs. Or you can grab the HTML using Save As, or the Print to PDF function (both in Windows not Adobe.) What I do not know how to do is to automatically restore the links. Having to do that manually would be a non-starter. Maybe some sort of global search and replace function. Also there's an Append All Links function in Acrobat that might do this. I dunno.

Having to download all the trash and then cull it out is a pain. Not a huge pain, as one is just a time issue, and the other is at least predictable, the trash is in three discrete clumps. Locations always same, roughly.

---------------

I'm glad I do not have a dog in the "fight" over how many PDFs there are in CJC, anyway it is not as fight as it is between friends. Personally I do not care, all I care about is whether the files match the TOCs and whether the right file comes up when I click through a link...

_______________

I need this afternoon and evening off away from the PC, a couple of old friends from the US are visiting Bangkok, one is a suppressor designer of some note and the other is publishers of SMALL ARMS REVIEW and they want to talk about the Good Old Days when I was enfant terrible of the arms business.

CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMISTRY 1951-1997

Volumes 29-39 are up.

I am making a new folder on 4shared for Volumes 40-49 and will upload 40 and 41 next.

Thr volumes are getting larger, and only way to compress them further is IMO too lossy. Accordingly I am splitting volumes into A and B to meet 4shared file maxima.

CANADIAN JOURNAL OF CHEMISTRY 1951-1997

Volumes 29-41 are up.

I made a new folder on 4shared for Volumes 40-49

The volumes are now running 125 Mb or about 10 Mb per issue so one volume per day is about all I can download, edit and upload. The remaining volumes will take 4-5 more weeks. More is they get much larger.

I just determined that as of Vol 44 CJC switched to 24 issues a year so I will have to add these 12 issues to the rar files asap before continuing to work on Vol 45.
