Nylon synthesis, help please

Blind Angel - 16-12-2002 at 12:15

I'm making a paper at school about plastic polymere and a friend of mine said that she already done nylon but she doesn't remember how. Can anyone help me about making Nylon (or any other plastic) easily and with the formulae and all the thing that come with.

can't a shitty grade of poly(ethene) be made by passing C2H4 through a solution of triethyl aluminium in petrol?

Nylon synthesis

If you want to make Nylon 6,6 this would be done using adipic (hexanedioic) acid and 1,6-diaminohexane.

If you want to make a polyester you can use di-ethanoic acid and 1,2-ethanediol

I am sure that you can find the formulas on the net and the reactions shouldn't be hard since you are writting a paper on it.

in fact were doing a paper on polymer, and i thought that nylon would be a nice polymer to make. If anyone has other idea it would be great.
Thank for the link by the way

see my post above :)

i've red about mixing C2F4 with HCl making Teflon, maybe we could get the same result with C2H4 ....

Polymers

The combinations of possible polimers are virtually endless. All you need is two monomers that will continue to react(nylon 6,6), or one monomer that will react with itself. (ethylene or ethene). They are classified as synthetic condensation polymers and addition polymers respectively.

You can make: polyethylene(polyvinyl), polypropene, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, poly vinyl acetate, poly tetrafluoroethene (teflon) neoprene, rubber, polyester....... the list goes on. :o

The real question is whic catalys should we use and why, what's the effect of the HCl on the C2H4 so it became -(C2H2)- ?

madscientist - 17-12-2002 at 16:27

HCl will add to H2C=CH2 to form CH3CH2Cl.

sorry, thx for the answer
