I know this is a chemistry forum, but I'm wondering if anyone knows some plasma physics to help me figure something out, related to microhollow
cathode sustained discharges.

i don't know microhllow cathode, but is it like a plasma cutter head?

It would be hard to say anything unless you ask a specific question, other than to say do a google search, the best information is as usual on the pay
for the pdf sites such as iop. Logically it would seem that the glow discharge in extremely narrow tubes is following the same approach used in gas
lasers where a small tube is used down the bore. This is to reduce side collisions between ions which knock excited ones back to the ground state
before stimulated emission can occur. Without doing a study on the subject, I can only surmise that they are trying to sustain specific energy states
in a glow discharge for the longest possible time.
Or they are building nano laser ray guns for their nanobot warriors.
