Took apart an old hard drive and found some black pellets

I looked on other forums and most answers I got said they're activated charcoal pellets, designed to adsorb traces of organic vapors from the drive.

Is that true?
Does anyone know if their adsorption performance is better than the activated charcoal from a standard gas mask?

I've taken apart several hard drives, and have never seen anything like this. What year was your hard drive made, to the best of your knowledge?

There are also neodymium magnets and potentially dysprosium alloys in most new drives, which is a good idea for experimentation.
