Solar cell can pay for itself

I live in Quebec.
I was calculating to see how much energy one of those garden lights can produce, how long does it take to charge a AA battery with it, how long does it last when powering the LED, etc.

Mine can make 4.29$ worth of electricity in 1 year, if there was sunlight 24 h a day (never mind the fact that it varies by hour and also by season).

I estimate that in reality, it can make 1$ per year. Which means that it can pay for itself in 3 years.

Anyone considered having a large solar panel or 2 at home?
During winter, I could use the electricity for heating. I don't need converters and batteries.

Thousands of people do this! I don't know if they've calculated if they pay for themselves, though! It would be interesting to find out just how long it would take to start profiting.
