HMF from glucose and fructose

Random - 21-12-2013 at 07:52

Hydroxymethylfurfural can be obtained from glucose and fructose by dehydrating it with HCl and metal chloride salt like chromium chloride, copper chloride etc.. and using two phase system of HCl, metal chloride and sugar and on another side some other solvent which I don't remember.

Now few questions are:
1) Can 19% HCl and copper chloride dehydrate sugar to HMF? Is there a way to test it's presence?
2) Can xylene be used as solvent in that two phase system?
3) Can HMF be isolated from the solvent (xylene) by forming insoluble bisulfite adduct?
