Ace Hardware brand toluene

CaptainPike - 25-4-2013 at 07:20

I have used this Ace Hardware's toluene, directly out of the tin can to perform a sulfonation, similar to that found in Vogel's Practical Organic Chemistry around page 872 (fifth edition), with no charring polymerization.

It says on the can, "100% pure toluene", of course, that can't be true, but I think the stuff is pretty clean. At least no thiazine – I kind of expected to wind up with a flask full of black tar.
So far, the reaction is going by the book, I have a single phase which looks clear, like a cup of Earl Grey with just the right amount water in my trap.
We'll see how the recrystallization works out, once I get my pump back (today or tomorrow).

So, CaptainPike reporting in my first post, hello, LOL and thumbs-up ace toluene.
