I'm trying to find a bit of background on the properties of activated charcoal for a nucleotide extraction procedure that I'm developing.
In the 50s people were using activated charcoal to purify nucleotides from complex extracts (and not phosphate, Pi). Nucleotides appear to bind very
well under acidic conditions and stay there when washed with water. The nucleotides can then be almost completely eluted by the addition of 1-2%
concentrated ammonia in 50% aqueous ethanol. I havent seen any examples of elutions using a different base such as NaOH.
I'd be very grateful if anyone can help explain this phenomenon....
