Hi, I'm new and find this site fascinating.
Most is beyond my current skill/hobby level.
But I managed to extract yellowcake
(Na or Ammonium Uranate) from
rocks I found in the desert.
It simulates some of the
in-situ leaching as well as conventional
extraction procedures, using Home
Depot supplies and sodabottle & coffeefilter
separation funnels. I used a variety of
assays including the U color in solution,
a fluorescent bead test
(using boric acid bug killer),
and radiation measurement to convince
myself I had done something.
I think y'all will appreciate the
the total cheapo on-hand-materials aspect
of the performance art. There is no
art without constraint.

I was under the impression that yellowcake was U3O8, if that is correct, then perhaps reduction in a thermite reaction with an alkali or alkaline
earth metal, or maybe Al then covering the reaction with argon as soon as the reaction has initiated would produce uranium metal with a reasonable
purity
