Wanted: members willing to seed forum backup via bittorrent

Polverone - 31-5-2012 at 11:58

The free bulk data hosting that I had up until a month or so ago is now gone. At the same time, each new forum backup grows larger. I think it is time to start distributing forum backups via bittorrent (other means too if anyone wants to offer it, but I can't right now).

I don't have a lot of upstream bandwidth on my home computer, so it is not the best seed machine. Are there members here who have good connectivity and a willingness to seed the forum backup? I would distribute a single copy to you for seeding and then everyone else who wants a copy could use bittorrent.

I can- I'm on Verizon FIOS with a static IP, 35/35.

hyfalcon - 31-5-2012 at 16:01

If a Comcast connection will help in any way I'm will to host the file or files.

Sedit - 31-5-2012 at 17:29

I use Vuze so I could download it and leave it there as a seed. My computer stays on most of the time so it should help a bit. Just PM me and let me know exactly what I need to do.

My upload speed is around 1.6 megabits/second. I can seed basically 24/7. I would be glad to help.

I can add appr. 1 Mbit/s upload speed. This would be available 24/7 as a service besides my website. Just U2U me if you want me to contribute with this.

We have a permanently live static IP connection and can seed from my pc with pleasure, I use U-torrent.

chemrox - 1-6-2012 at 08:50

We can use my comcast lines too. I seed old jazz files all the time.

Polverone - 1-6-2012 at 12:02

Wizzard, it looks like you have the highest upstream speed. I'm going to get the file to you and then additional seeders can provide further capacity and redundancy.

Eliteforum - 1-6-2012 at 13:16

Rent a seedbox. I toyed with one last year, it cost me a few quid for 20gig of space and 100/1000mb connection (d/u)

I'm sure people will donate towards the cost of it.

Wizzard - 1-6-2012 at 13:24

I will set up a torrent and distribute the torrent file here :) I will host it on my server 24/7 for whatever amount of time is needed.

deathmetals - 2-6-2012 at 05:44

Id be able to seed to i got like a 50/50 from holland
up somtimes goes to 70

Wizzard - 4-6-2012 at 07:52

Torrent has been sent to Povlerone, just waiting for his distribution ( I recommended putting the .torrent file on the ScienceMadness server )... Everything should be set up :)

Eliteforum - 8-6-2012 at 23:24

Downloading the torrent now. Speeds are ranging from 10kbps to just under 1mbps.

Wizzard - 9-6-2012 at 05:45

Checked this morning- Share ratio of 9.0 with a total upload of 40GB :) Who else wants to download???

Alternative download link.

Polverone - 9-6-2012 at 14:02

Thanks Eliteforum, that's convenient for people who don't want to deal with bittorrent. Thanks also Wizzard for jumping in to distribute the backup. That would be 20% of my monthly site data transfer quota if I were hosting it myself!

followup: library and LANL hosting

Polverone - 13-6-2012 at 13:12

I got such a great response to the bittorrent inquiry that I have to ask: who has good upstream speed, a static IP address, and can run a web server on an always-on machine? It could be a spare hosting account you have or even your home computer, if you happen to have the right arrangement with your ISP.

I ask because the public Sciencemadness library and LANL documents are going to exceed my data transfer quota. I've already disabled access to LANL PDFs, but the library volumes alone are costing me about 10 GB of data transfer per day. I think that together, the LANL and library documents would result in about 300-400 GB of data transfer per month. The disk space consumed by the combined collections is about 6 GB.

Let me know if you're willing and able to help. I would transfer a copy of all the data to you, verify that your web server was set up, then point the DNS entry for library.sciencemadness.org to your machine.

Eliteforum - 15-6-2012 at 13:48

I can host it plus another other downloadable material on my hosting package. Should you want too.

Unmetered caps, so it'll never exceed my monthly quota!

Failing that my home connection speeds are:

Polverone - 18-6-2012 at 12:46

Thanks Eliteforum. I have been spending less time on this site and more time on job hunting, but I'll try to get the content to you this week.

Eliteforum - 20-6-2012 at 02:23

I can u2u you some ftp details if it'll make it easier?

hkparker - 24-6-2012 at 16:43

Sorry I'm late to the party! I own a dediserver/seedbox, I'll throw it up there. 24/7 gigbit forever.

Fusionfire - 5-9-2012 at 05:01

I am currently away from home on holidays but I have a fibre optic connection at home with 80 Mb/s down, 20 Mb/s up. I can set up an old computer as a server.

Can't guarantee static IP.

White Yeti - 28-1-2013 at 08:35

I have a static IP address, but a rather slow connection 18Mb/sec download, 1.9Mb/sec upload speed. My PC is online almost 24/7 with a few hiccups every once in a while. I have an external hard drive with 430GB of free space, I'm thinking it could be an asset for storing large files, but perhaps not as useful for hosting the forum.

I'm not much of a computer person, but I'd appreciate a PM if anyone is interested. I'd be glad to help out in any way I can.

chemrox - 28-1-2013 at 18:11

I have a static IP but it changes upon request or if Comcast wants to. However I'm also in the process of getting an onsite server I could seed from. I'm not clear why static would be necessary. I seed music from my laptop whenever its on through Frostwire. I could use Frostwire to seed the backup as well. I could seed via frost from one of the desktops that are always on.
