A couple of questions

Ok... So first off, I'm a chemsitry student and being a student I also have a very limited amount of expendable money, that being said I have a couple of questions:
1. Where can I get some standarad chemical glassware? Specifically, I need a 250mL beaker, 50mL test tube, and 60mL gas-tight-syringes?
2. I've been using www.sciencelab.com for chemicals, is there a cheaper or better supplier?
3. I'm a fan of using household items for chemistry, are there any "good" substances to get?
4. One questoin on lab theroy:
My friends and I have been trying to synthesize some NI3 (safe entertainment purposes), and I was wondering if the following reactions would do:
KI(aq) + Cl2(g)--> KCL(aq) + I2(s)
then after performing sublimation to purify the I2 we would:
3I2(s) + 2NH3 (aq) --> 2NI3(s) + 3H2
then dissolve NI3 in ethyl alchol.
So my question is, is that an ok lab-design?

Question
1: for glassware I suggest ebay... the place to go.
2: yes there are, but you are in the US it seems so I can't help you so much. Check the 'Readily available chemicals'.
3: There are so many it would exceed the scope of a single post to write them down. Check above link once again.

As to your reaction - I don't see why it shouldnt work. I2 will precipitate though, I think, so no need to sublime.
Similarly, NI3 x NH3 does not dissolve in alcohol, it preciptates. Easily filtered off.
Just be very careful with it, it goes off literally by the touch of a feather.

Ebay is good for getting most lab equipment but if you need some cheap regular stuff then labwarehouse.com is good.

I havn't made NI3 yet but the reaction looks good.

Household chemicals are the bread and butter of this forum!

Just a few examples:
Clay glaze powders can be ordered online in 1-2 pound bags! Clay Chemicals

Just a quick look there shows:
Chromium Oxide 1 pound for 10$
Manganese Dioxide 2 pounds for 4$
They have some more stuff to

The OTC chemical list has lots of chemicals you can find around in shops

I recomend you read Uncle Tungsten by Oliver Sacks. Its about him growing up in the UK and doing home chemistry. Im reading it right now and its realy good.

Iodine

Can be easily obtained by adding dilute HCl to KI dissolved in bleach. Wash the iodine well before using, and do the reaction outside since chlorine gas may be released as well.
