Hi guys,
Do you foresee any reactions occuring between CH2Cl2 and Hg under standard conditions?
I ask because I am getting paranoid after spilling some dichloromethane on elemental mercury in the fume cupboard (broken thermometer). I'm worried
that I run the risk of mercury poisoning through my gloves.
Many thanks in advance.

Hg + 2 Na + 2 CH3Cl → (CH3)2Hg + 2 NaCl
Dont know if any similar reaction is possible with CH2Cl2 but it won't happen without a trigger (like metallic sodium in this case).

no, no risk at all, but of course you have to keep the Hg inside a closed flask because the Hg can produce vapours that can be poisonous. The DCM is
toxic all right but only if you get exposed for some long period and/or at high levels.
There is no reaction between the two compounds as I know
