Unusual Explosives/Propellents

In the world of energetic compound there appears to be a sea of endless possibilities. While there are quite a few well known explosives, there also exists vast volumes of research on other potential energetic substances, much of it has not really been brought to light in online discussions. I have been trying to bring the lesser known ones out of obscurity. The sites below focus on the more unusual or lesser known compounds, or involve an unusual reaction for the preparation.

Are any members in this forum aware of any other unusual compounds? Or are there compounds which you would like to see more information/research about?

I sometimes wonder whether it is just by chance that mercury fulminate has been in such wide use, while basic stannous nitrate is essentially unknown. It is also interesting how the popularity of acetone peroxide spread so fast amongst the more dubious internet sites. Nitroaromatics are well known, but the home synthesis of nitroalkanes for energetic purposes seems virtually nonexistant. Nitrolate salts, despite their relative ease of preparation, are another little discussed topic.

I have always been interested in trinitromethane (nitroform) and its salts, though I have never had a chance to experiment.

I notice you can't resist spamming this forum with links to your personal web venture, so I can only conclude you are very full of yourself, full to overflowing actually.

It would be welcome here for you to discuss nuts and bolts practical chemical syntheses that somewhat more within
the scope of Mad Science, but you seem to be on your own little planet with regards to accessible precursors and methods as well as unproven theory of your own mixed in rich portion with published material which you go beyond.

Are we impressed or humbled by the magnificence of it all ?
Speaking for myself alone of course, ....I am not impressed,
but puzzled about where exactly you are leading beyond the la la land of imagination and unproven theories of your own.

The explosives art is a type of practical toolmaking. Experiments done to produce energetic materials are analogous to a toolmaker making an individual prototype tool, mindful of the cost of raw materials and the complexity of the process involved for making that tool which is by its nature a one time use consumable item.
The practical value of the tool contemplated is subject to limitations that are
economic primarily, with the exception of course for special, exotic niche applications where greatest performance is desired and cost is no object,
which would generally be aerospace or weapons applications or possibly
a specialty application in petroleum industry or other special industrial use. There
are many exotic explosives, designer explosives possible to be contemplated
and possible to be manufactured which for practical considerations will probably never come into widespread use. That reality is not exclusively a consequence of dullard chemists being too unsophisticated to be able to conceive of such exotic materials or devise synthetic methods for making them.

TETRAACETYLDICHLOROACETYLHAXAAZAISOWURTZITANE
TRIHYDRATE

Abstract
A novel hexasubstituted hexaazaisowurtzitane - tetraacetyldichlorohexaaza
isowurtzitane (TADCIW) was synthesized, and the colorless and transparent single
crystal of TAIDCIW*3H 20 was prepared by evaporating solvent slowly. The crystal
belongs to monoclinic system and space group Cc with parameters a = 1.0469(2) nm, b
= 1.5347(3) nm, c = 1.5364(4) nm; fi=95.00"; Z = 4; V = 2.4591(9) nm3; Dc = 1.468
g.cm-3; R = 0.0487, WR = 0.1168.

1. INTRODUCTION
Hexabenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (HBTW) is the first example of hexasubstituted
hexaazaisowurtzitane. The synthesis of HBIW and its derivatives with substituted benzyl
group were reported by A. T. Nielsen in 1990 [1]. Since then, the study of
hexaazaisowurtzitane derivatives has been focused on the high energy density compound -
hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW, CL-20) and a number of related compounds have
been synthesized [2-4]. The authors have been successful on synthesizing firstly the title
compound which should be the intermediate of some energetic compounds, such as
tetranitrodiazidoacetylhexaazaisowurtzitane and tetranitrodinitroacetylhexaaza-isowurtzitane etc. Besides, TADCIW,3H 20 crystal structure was measured by X-ray diffraction technique.

2. EXPERIMENTAL
2.1 Synthesis of TADCIW and preparation of single crystal of TADCIWo3H 20
20.4 g of tetraacetylhexaazaisowurtzitane which was prepared based on literature [3] and 100 ml of DMF were added in a flask. Heat the contents of the flask to 45 'C and add 25 ml of chloroacetyl chloride with vigorous stirring. Close the reaction flask and vacuum the released HCl. Let reaction proceed at 45 'C for 2 hours. Remove the unreacted chloroacetyl chloride and a part of DMF by distillation under reduced pressure. Pour the contents of flask into 300 ml of cold water and obtain 26.0 g of the colorless solid (in. p. 265-266 'C) by filtration and washing with cold water and acetone. The yield of TADCIW reached about 90 %. Elementary analysis: calculated for C18H22C112N60 6 (%): C, 44.17; H, 4.50; N, 17.18; Cl, 14.52; found (%): C, 44.10; H, 4.64; N, 17.12; Cl, 14.47. IR (KBr, cm"'): 3045, 2993, 2942, w; 1685, 1655, s; 1413, 1362, 1337, 1293, 1264, 1162, s; 1060,979, 942, 868, m. MS (Cl) 246 'H
NMR (DMSO-d6, ppm): 8 6.89-6.31 (in, 6H(CH)), 8 4.93-4.71 (4H(CH2)), 8 2.06-1.97 (m,
12H (CH3)).

Dissolve the dry product in a acetone-water mixture and evaporate slowly the solvent to
certain extent in a vacuum desicator to obtain a colorless and transparent single crystals of TADCIWo3H 20 (0.4x0.4x0.4 mm) for X-ray diffraction analysis.

Ozone is an unusual one. When cooled and warmed back up rapidly, it reacts with itself and explodes.

As for unusual rocket propellants, I think ALICE is an odd one. Who would have thought that aluminium would react with water under the right conditions.

Perhaps another odd rocket propellant is nitrous oxide and RP1.
Some prefer to use LOX, but N2O is easier to liquify and store than oxygen, so amateur rocket builders use nitrous instead of oxygen.

Although nitric acid is usual, I experienced unusual explosion of acetone+nitric acid+silver nanoparticle waste.

It's in the summer and the temperature was high, my friend accidentally added acetone into nitric acid/silver waste.
The waste bottle was under my workbench and it exploded after 30 minutes. The black trait of silver covered the floor, the pillar and even went up to the ceiling.

Fortunately, I was going downstairs to get some lunch.

However, we had to write 5-pages report for the faculty to explained what happen. So pity.

Sounds like there was formation of either silver fulminate, or possibly even silver nitrolate (formula AgC2H3N2O3).

Particularly interesting is:
Hydrazine is treated with ( ClO3F, platinum sponge, hexane, reflux 80degC, Cu2O ), then 35% hydrochloirc acid, filtered & washed, Na2CO3, filter & wash, then dried. Product is "N-perchlorylperchloric hydrazide"
O3Cl--NHNH--ClO3

(do not take the trouble of searching for information about this hypothetical compound, it does not appear in any internet search)

The book looks interesting, might get a copy. One can immediately tell that about half his ideas on the cover could never work, but some of the proposed compounds are intriguing. Does anyone have a copy of this book? What are your thoughts?
