I do not know what the deal is but Sodium Nitrite used to be trivial to obtain. I ordered it from Duda Diesel or Amazon all the time. Now, all of a
sudden, you would think it was ephedrine or something. I can't find it anywhere. There is the "pink curing salt" but I do not know if that is pure
sodium nitrite with just a pink dye for safety or what. I need it for nitrous acid production.
Any leads?

“Pink curing salt” is mostly sodium chloride with about 6% sodium nitrite.
I bought 2 lbs of pure sodium nitrite from Grigg’s department store a year ago, but it seems they’ve recently removed it. Nitrite has pretty much
completely disappeared over the last few years. The only source I know of is Onyxmet. Carolina Biological also has it, but only sell it to businesses
or schools.
You’re probably best off making it yourself. The method I believe works the best is the reaction of calcium sulfite with sodium nitrate. Calcium
sulfite can be easily prepared from calcium chloride and sodium sulfite.

After 30 minutes of looking: found some! Only $20 for 2 lbs including shipping.thermochromic - 9-11-2024 at 18:45
I will check it out... thanks. I did a little research and best I can tell, the sudden removal has to do with its sudden popularity for use in
suicide. Same thing happened to Sodium Azide. You used to see it on Amazon sold by that Indian company Hi-Tech or whatever it was called.
If I end up having to make it for some reason, sodium metabisulfite should work too wouldn't it? Sir_Gawain - 9-11-2024 at 19:23

Sodium metabisulfite hydrolyses into sodium bisulfite; adding one molar equivalent of sodium hydroxide forms sodium sulfite. Texium - 9-11-2024 at 21:36
I have a lot of it, and many other things. See my sales thread.
