Hi all.
I just popped in to make this post and found that Random had pulled up last year's thread as a reminder.

SS will be on this year.
I will put together the sign up form later this week if I can, or next weekend at the latest.

Registration will stay open until the end of October, and I will send out allocations shortly after that.

Sir_Gawain - 6-10-2024 at 15:01

Awesome, I was just thinking of this! I’m looking forward to participating this year!

DraconicAcid - 6-10-2024 at 15:20

Yay!

Secret Santa 2024

MadHatter - 7-10-2024 at 08:14

Excellent ! I'll be waiting for the signup and a holiday card list.

Admagistr - 7-10-2024 at 12:50

That's good news;)

Dr.Bob - 10-10-2024 at 04:58

Some good news, yea! Nice to think of something fun now. Look forward to it.

Secret Santa 2024

MadHatter - 10-10-2024 at 09:33

Hadn't thought about it with all the shit that's been going on in my life. Seems
j_sum1 beat me and arkoma to make the request. That's cool ! I'm hoping there's
some new participants as I like to expand my holiday card list. Weather's starting
to turn colder here in Maine. Daytime highs in the 50 F range. Won't be long before
winter gets here. I'll check back looking for the signup list. j_sum1, thanks again
for organizing this event as you've done in the past.

Vince

j_sum1 - 12-10-2024 at 02:37

I was looking for something in my office today, Madhatter and your postcard from last year turned up. It have me a chuckle again. Looking forward to this year's card.

Maybe I will get to Maine one day. But I think I will avoid winter.

Sir_Gawain - 13-10-2024 at 14:11

I’ve got some questions:
1. Are we swapping gifts, i.e. is the person you are giving the gift the same one sending you a gift?
2. International shipping. Never done it before, is it prohibitively expensive, and risky for fragile objects? It would be more fun exchanging gifts with people from other countries, but I’d rather spend the money on the gift rather than the postage.

j_sum1 - 13-10-2024 at 16:41

No. It is not usually a direct swap. I divide the whole group into mailing regions, place the names randomly in a circle and have everyone allocated to the person on their left.

I have found international shipping less problem than you might imagine. The easiest way is to place an order on eBay or similar and have them send directly to your recipient. Little things and personalised notes can be sent through the mail as a letter or small package which is not usually too prohibitive.

Great to gave you on board, Sir Gawain. (My favourite of all the Round Table knights.)

Sir_Gawain - 14-10-2024 at 17:59

Form submitted. Thanks for putting this together, j_sum1!

Secret Santa 2024

MadHatter - 15-10-2024 at 06:27

All signed up ! Will ship anywhere ! j_sum1, thanks for asking people about
mailing addresses for holiday cards. I realize there are people who would prefer to
remain private. That's his/her option and right.

Can't blame anybody from a generally warm environment wanting to be in Maine
during the winter. Getting quite cold already. Like the immortal Frank Zappa said:

"Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow".

I'll post when I've ordered my cards from VistaPrint.

Admagistr - 15-10-2024 at 08:20

Just got on board, looking forward to a special chemical cosmopolitan party;)!

bnull - 16-10-2024 at 05:56

Let's assume I'm a moron*. How does this Secret Santa thing work?

*: There are probably others who are interested to know but are too shy to ask.

Edit: Grammar.

[Edited on 16-10-2024 by bnull]

DraconicAcid - 16-10-2024 at 13:21

You sign up. The organizer gives you the address and preferences of one of the other people, and you secretly send them a gift.

Someone else sends you one.

bnull - 17-10-2024 at 13:58

What about the price of a nice flask? How much is it in dollars or euros?

DraconicAcid - 17-10-2024 at 14:13

Depends on what kind of flask you consider nice. AliExpress has a wide range of glassware, and will ship for you. Same with Amazon and other online sellers. Have a browse and see what you would like to spend.

Sir_Gawain - 17-10-2024 at 14:32

@bnull, “price of a nice flask” means around 20-30 $/€, but just spend what you can afford. There’s a good chance you already have some stuff lying around that would make a great gift.

P.S. you can find used Pyrex glassware on EBay for about the same or less than the Chinese stuff

bnull - 18-10-2024 at 04:54

There's also the stuff @Dr.Bob sells. I forgot that. :D

I'll see how broke I am by the end (29) of the month and, if within reasonable limits, I'll give it a try. If not, there's next year.

Thanks.

j_sum1 - 20-10-2024 at 18:55

Just bumping this to keep it on the front page.

We have had a few regulars and a vouple of new folk sign up.
But there are quite a few who have not.
Last year there were some who were disappointed to miss out. I fon't want that to happen this year.
Deadline is the end of October.

Since the question of cost came up...
I wrote "something about the value of a nice flask" as an indication.
Really, it is better if this is not an expensive exercise. The best gifts are often small, quirky, and appeal to the nerdity of this community. One of my favourites to receive was a postcard of operations in an asbestos mine a century ago. (Thanks plante1999.) If you are on a budget, don't let that stop you.

J.

DraconicAcid - 21-10-2024 at 06:52

I was wondering why bnull asked about the price of a nice flask!

j_sum1 - 23-10-2024 at 22:58

Bumping.
A week to go. Make sure you don't miss out. (Espwcially newbies and regulars.)(Ok. That covers everyone.)

Edit.
I meant the tautology.
The Elmer Fudd-ism was unintentional.

[Edited on 24-10-2024 by j_sum1]

Sturge11 - 24-10-2024 at 08:07

Yep. Hoping to get in on this year's.

Texium - 24-10-2024 at 18:59

I don't think I will directly participate this year, but I do still have lots of glassware and chemicals available, and would like to offer a 30% discount on anything I've got, whether you are purchasing it as a Secret Santa gift or just want to treat yourself!

Admagistr - 24-10-2024 at 19:17

It's too bad you're not gonna be a part of this...

Sir_Gawain - 24-10-2024 at 19:17

It would be amazing if someone could get some Sciencemadness logo stickers/patches made for SS. IIRC there was some made a few years ago; are any still around? If any are made, they could be sent to Madhatter to include with the cards.

Just a thought I had.

Phosphor-ing - 25-10-2024 at 05:08

I'm in. This is my favorite gift to send and receive every year!

@Sir_Gawain I received a shirt one year! It is a prized possession.

I know a fellow who does prints like this. Screen prints, direct to garment, direct to transfer paper, etc. He does mugs, stillframes, canvas, board, shirts, hoodies, whatever you can think.

Sir_Gawain - 25-10-2024 at 12:03

I would make them myself, but I’m kinda broke right now lol.

[Edited on 10-25-2024 by Sir_Gawain]

j_sum1 - 25-10-2024 at 13:29

Here is a Science Madness mug.
You can get these direct sent to your recipient.
There are other things on the site too. Not sure about t shirts.

BromicAcid - 26-10-2024 at 05:20

I had a bunch of these patches made about a year ago for my Magic the Gathering obsession. It's pretty trivial to get an order through, they also only worked out to <$2 each at 100 ordered. Any clue on demand for a SM patch?

Patch/Emblem

MadHatter - 26-10-2024 at 10:45

Sir_Gawain, thank you suggesting sending a items like that. The increased cost of
postage(if any) would be insignificant especially on 1st Class mail which is what I
prefer no matter where I send it. I'm zeroing in 1 of 3 "Maine" themed cards. Lots
to choose from ! Most fun in the year even though I admit, being an energetics
type, I will always have Independence Day(4th Of July) in my heart. Let me know
when y'all are ready so I can get my card order in !

Sir_Gawain - 27-10-2024 at 18:37

@jsum_1 do you have an estimate of the number of participants?

j_sum1 - 27-10-2024 at 19:04

Quote: Originally posted by Sir_Gawain

We are up to 13 at the moment. We have had up to 35 in the past.

bnull - 29-10-2024 at 03:47

I'm going to take a dog to the vet for an I&D today, so now I'm too broke for a gift but not for a Christmas card. :P

You can send me one of your cards, @MadHatter, and I'll send you one of mine.

j_sum1 - 29-10-2024 at 19:19

Sign up anyway, bnull.
I will see what we can arrange.

I was going to send some emails out to everyone who has participated in years past. Life is hectic and I can't see myself getting to it.
So, just a general encouragement - don't miss out.

You have a couple of days. I will do allocations on the weekend.

bnull - 30-10-2024 at 08:40

Thank you, @j_sum1. That's very kind of you. But a card is perfect. Until I get around to build a new cabinet, I'm out of space.

j_sum1 - 31-10-2024 at 00:47

Well, bnull. You still need to sign up so that I have your address to pass on to Madhatter.

I have just received a very generous offer open to those in the US.
If anyone wants to participate, but is flat out broke or just can't jpin in, there is a member here with some surplus stuff that he is happy to box up and offload on your behalf as a secret santa gift to someone else.

Yeah, you read that right.

I will add an extra line to the form and if you want to participate on those terms, then you can join in.

It is Thursday here and I will close registratikns Saturday. Youhave two more days.
Sign ups now exceed last years, so that is good.

Oops. I forgot to send the form. :D

Bedlasky - 1-11-2024 at 00:14

I sign up first time this year. I once sent package to Vano (we were exchanging some chemicals) and my package didn't arrived. It later appeared back at my place, but I felt like an absolute idiot. So fingers crossed that everything gets delivered properly.

j_sum1 - 3-11-2024 at 00:57

Hey all.
Allocations have now been sent out.
If there are any glitches, please let me know. (And there might be some. I had some missing addresses and my cut and paste skills have been lacking this evening.)

Hey Buddy, please check your email. The U2U glitched for some reason.
MadHatter, I will send those addresses for cards soon.

I will now go ahead and close the registration form.
The real fun starts!

Sir_Gawain - 3-11-2024 at 19:05

Awesome! Thanks for getting this together, j_sum1! It’s definitely one of the highlights of this year.

Raid - 7-11-2024 at 15:03

It seems that once again I'm too late.
Always next year, I suppose.

DraconicAcid - 16-11-2024 at 11:12

Canada Post is now on strike, so Canadian santees and the santees of Canadian may have to be extra patient.

(Raid- if you PM your address to j_sum1, you might still end up with a postcard.)

SnailsAttack - 17-11-2024 at 18:33

I have once again missed the registration date.

If there's someone else who missed it who would like to maybe trade a small box of gifts, DM me with U2U sometime before.. December 10th or so.

esquizete_electrolysis - 18-11-2024 at 10:02

Almost done boxing up my gift. The main part of my box is done, so now to fill up the rest of the box with little things. I must admit, this has been some of the most fun i've had on a project yet. Thanks j_sum1 for setting this up!

According to tracking the gift to my recipient was delivered at 2:00 PM yesterday.

Dr.Bob - 1-12-2024 at 08:07

I just got my Christmas Postcard from Maine. Looks like my brorthers driving years ago in NC. I spent 4 years in upstate NY, so I got some practice there, but in NC, the DOT's policy is, "God put it there, he will take it away" when it comes to plowing. Our town's snow plow is often stuck once there is any snow. But thanks for the fun and the Christmas Spirit. I'm trying to prepare some Secret Santa packages now.

Snow

MadHatter - 1-12-2024 at 10:57

Dr. Bob,

I can identify with what you're saying about "delays" in snow plowing. When I lived
in Maryland, 6 inches of snow caused widespread panic among Marylanders ! They
might not get plowed for 2 days. Here in Maine, 18 inches comes down, the plows
and salt trucks are out in force, and before then the end of the day it's back to business
as usual ! About 1/4 of the people here, including my brother-in-law, has a plow
blade on the front of his/her truck. Here, 6 inches of snow is laughed at ! Glad to
hear you got the card !

[Edited on 2024/12/1 by MadHatter]

charley1957 - 1-12-2024 at 12:03

Back in the 70s when I was stationed in Portland, Maine, seemed like every soul with a pickup truck had a snow plow on the front of it. After a big snow there were dozens of them roaming the streets, jumpstarting dead vehicles, pulling vehicles out of snow banks or pushing snow. Often they jump started and towed without any payment, just to help out a fellow citizen. I doubt it’s like that now.

Texium - 1-12-2024 at 17:09

I can’t speak for Maine, but at least here in Utah there is still a culture of assisting those unfortunate enough to get stuck in the snow. Last winter I happened upon a woman who skidded off the road and into a median in my neighborhood, had her car stuck over the curb. I didn’t own tow straps but I told her I’d go buy some and be right back. When I returned, another neighbor with a pickup was already towing her car out. So I didn’t need the tow straps after all, but perhaps I’ll have a chance to use them this winter.

Canada Postal Service Strike

MadHatter - 2-12-2024 at 09:25

Apparently started November 29. I have 3 cards going to Canada. Hope they made
it to their destinations. Keeping my fingers crossed !

DraconicAcid - 2-12-2024 at 10:42

We'll have to wait until the strike is over to find out.

Hey!

I wasn't expecting anything since I had forgotten to sign up for Secret Santa. Anyway, thanks so much for sending a card!
I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!

Thanks,
Raid

Sir_Gawain - 2-12-2024 at 14:29

Just sent my package off!

BromicAcid - 3-12-2024 at 14:06

Thanks for the card MadHatter

Waiting to send off my package till Canada clears up their shipping issues.

j_sum1 - 3-12-2024 at 15:23

I sent off my international packages yesterday -- which is a bit late. They may not arrive on time. My apologies in advance. Drop-ship items should arrive in a day or two however.
I hope they give as much enjoyment to the recipient as they were to send.

Looking forward to the card from Madhatter. Always a laugh.

Sir_Gawain - 3-12-2024 at 16:06

Got my card today. Thanks, Vince!

violet sin - 3-12-2024 at 18:56

MadHatter, Thanks for the card! : )
Always appreciated and funny. I hope your holiday season is a wonderful adventure with friends and family

PYRIDINEyade - 4-12-2024 at 02:35

I got the card! Thanks!

Sir_Gawain - 4-12-2024 at 09:44

USPS says my package was delivered. Hope it arrived in one piece!

Package

MadHatter - 4-12-2024 at 09:52

I hope it was packaged extremely and fairly shock resistant. Remember, it's football
season and sometimes I think they handle packages like a football. One year a
package was sent to me and the 250 ml Erlenmeyer flask was in pieces.

chempyre235 - 4-12-2024 at 15:20

Hi! This is my first post. I have received the Christmas card Sunday, but I forgot to reply. Thanks, Mad Hatter!

I'm trying to get my package shipped this week to my secret recipient. I hope it finds him well, and in the correct number of pieces.

Though I don't yet have a lab of my own, I hope to get a place to do chemistry in the near(ish) future. So, you'll probably see me again with many questions and updates!

[Edited on 12/4/2024 by chempyre235]

Support

MadHatter - 4-12-2024 at 17:14

You're in the right place for support ! I see that your user name has "pyre" as part
of your handle. Are you the energetics type like me ? Just curious.

charley1957 - 4-12-2024 at 18:00

Thanks for the card, MadHatter! I thought it was quite appropriate. Here in Texas, we get a dusting of snow and they close the whole world down. In Maine, nothing slows them down. Good on them!

esquizete_electrolysis - 5-12-2024 at 11:58

Got my card! Thanks Madhatter! I also shipped out my package a few weeks ago and it is reported as delivered. I hope my recipient enjoys what I sent.

chempyre235 - 5-12-2024 at 19:39

Quote: Originally posted by MadHatter

No, I'm not. I'm more into salt chemistry and some organics, and I'm working on practical applications for various compounds. As for energetics, I'm very fascinated, but would never trust myself to do much more than reloading ammunition. I'll probably open a new thread to introduce myself more officially.

Also, my package is nearly ready to go, so I'll try to ship it tomorrow.

Dr.Bob - 7-12-2024 at 14:08

I just got a ScienceMadness.org coffee cup in the mail. It is great, as I busted my last geeky mug at work a while back, and had to resort to a boring one. So thanks to whomever sent it. I am working on shipping some packages right now for various people, hopefully I can get them all there on time.

[Edited on 8-12-2024 by Dr.Bob]

Phosphor-ing - 8-12-2024 at 05:55

I received my gift and MadHatters card. Thank you. I just sent my gift. Merry Christmas everyone!

Admagistr - 9-12-2024 at 14:07

My gift was shipped to the US on Monday! So all that's left is a wish that customs doesn't confiscate it and the package arrives safely. This is what I wish for all of us who are part of the Secret Santa event!

DraconicAcid - 9-12-2024 at 14:45

I'm still waiting to hear if my Santee received the first bit before I send anything else.

Sir_Gawain - 10-12-2024 at 15:24

Hey, thank you to the person who sent me the sciencemadness mug!

Admagistr - 11-12-2024 at 08:33

According to the Post Office, my gift was sent to its destination-USA, so good news!

Elemental Phosphorus - 12-12-2024 at 10:49

Received my card! Thank you! And my international package is being mailed - I hope it arrives on time, but I apologize if not - it is going a long way.

Admagistr - 13-12-2024 at 06:04

Thank you Madhatter, the craziest hatter;))! Today I found a postcard from you! Next year I will send you one too:)!

bnull - 15-12-2024 at 06:51

It arrived! :D Thank you very much for the postcard, @MadHatter! Someone got it from the mail box and didn't bother to tell me. And here I was, thinking that the postal service had lost it somewhere.

They folded it, though.

charley1957 - 16-12-2024 at 05:07

Finally got my Santee’s package together this weekend and it is being mailed out today. I apologize to my Santee if it arrives late, as I started too late. Life is just busy right now, but that’s really no excuse, I just didn’t attend to it like I should have. Anyway, Merry Christmas and have a wonderful New Year!!

Texium - 16-12-2024 at 07:35

Got your card, MadHatter! Happy holidays to you, and maybe take it easy on the coffee brandy if you decide to go for a joyride in the snow! ;)

Sir_Gawain - 19-12-2024 at 15:34

Came home from work today to a package of various compounds and elements for my collection. Thank you very much, j_sum1!

I assume it was you who also sent me the mug. Very much appreciated, and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas!

DraconicAcid - 20-12-2024 at 10:55

Canadian postal workers are now back to work, and mail is starting to trickle through. (Nothing from SS yet, but my kids' presents have started to arrive.)

Admagistr - 20-12-2024 at 17:05

Unfortunately, it looks like Santa is going to be late this year, my package has been sitting in the US at the International Exchange Post since December 14. But there is also the possibility that the brokered tracking is not complete and only the final information that the package has been delivered will appear. And I haven't received my gift from Santa yet either, so I'm hoping for the better possibility that Santa will just be late and fulfill his mission!;)

PYRIDINEyade - 20-12-2024 at 21:31

I happened to check the international mail page and saw that the gift seems to have arrived safely, which is a relief.
Now, all that's left is to patiently wait for the gift to arrive at my place.

Admagistr - 21-12-2024 at 14:38

A gift from me is waiting at the US Post Office for the recipient to pick it up!

Bedlasky - 22-12-2024 at 11:47

Finally I overcomed my procrastination and sent my gift. But my santee live pretty close, so it shouldn't take too long for package to be delivered.

DraconicAcid - 22-12-2024 at 15:53

Santa just delivered a selection of metal samples to my house! Thanks, Santa!

j_sum1 - 22-12-2024 at 18:04

Hi all.
I just returned from a family holiday. Great to see that stuff is arriving.

Sir Gawain, I honestly cannot remember what I put together for you -- except for the discovery that I only had a couple of small pieces of tellurium when I thought I had more than 100 grams. You got what I had, and now I think I need to visit onyxmet. Anyway, good to hear that the package arrived safely.

Madhatter's card as usual was a good laugh. Thanks so much.

There have been a few glitches this year which will mean some packages will arrive late. I am just about to send off some u2us to those involved. Really sorry this happened. I try to avoid this kind of thing.

J.

:( Mine will be sent in early January. I discovered, amongst other things, that my card is not accepted by Ebay and that our postal service has too many rules ("handle with care" is apparently not one of them).

I met Santa and Santa says: ChemicallyCurious, pick up your present at the Post Office!;)

Another great year with the ScienceMadness secret Santa! Thank you for my gifts! I can now try my first grignard reaction!

Last evening I picked up a gift from my generous Santa, thanks so much Bedlasky! It was in the Z-box until midnight on December 25, I didn't find out until 2am on December 26, so I wrote to Santa and he arranged an extension to pick it up until midnight the next day. My Santa lives in the same city as me and there are probably only two or three of us from our country on the Forum in total. If j sum1 was assigning partners by lot, that's an interesting result;)!

Woohoo. Package arrived today with a beautiful piece of crystalling bismuth. I haven't got a nice piece for the element collection (until now). All my attempts to make some crystals have proved to be decidedly "meh".
Thanks Santa.

Thank you Santa! I picked up my package this morning and I must say that I am shocked at how much Santa sent to me. This has honestly made my holiday.
