I could not find a topic anywhere dealing with ion chromatography and I think the subject deserve some attention.
Several years ago at a previous job, as an analyst for anions, I had a good time running the Dionex ICS2000 for a living. I have always been curious
about what things are made of and see concentration of various chemical change with time, weather etc...
So I found a few module of the older DX500 on ebay and put them together for some analysis right at home. The good part about Ion Chromatography is
that it can be ran and shut down fairly quickly (compare to other analytical means) does not requires large amount of cryogenics (Gamma spec, ICPs...)
and can be pretty easy to use once the set up and calibrations are done...
i`ll post some screen shots later if the videos are too much time consuming,
The annoying part is the astronomical amount of time consumed setting it up and calibrating the instrument tweaking it for best results...All of which
uses consumables, mobile phases and standards which can be tricky to obtain.
But Covid forced me in quarantine last year and i had plenty of time to take care of things and here is the results:

With that i could partake in some fun including ammonium ion in my own piss...vastly diluted ...

All of these analysis are hovering in the low ppm range and a simple trick allowed me to get a 1000 fold better resolution to low ppb... pretty good
for old equipment set up by my amateur...

I thought this could be of interest to the forum and since some of us are doing chemistry at home with sometimes questionable results, an ion
chromatograph can help determine qualitatively AND quantitatively potential unknown .. I know i`ve been there with metals extractions from minerals
not knowing if i had a sulfate or a phosphate...

Wow, I really like your channel! Lots of interesting videos, and some pretty advanced stuff in there. It's really cool to see actual practical use of
