preparation of BrCN

orlan - 10-5-2009 at 09:34

I am interested in procedure of prep of BrCN (cyanogen bromide) and experience if someone done this.

2 NaCN + 2 Br2 → (CN)2 + Br2 + 2 NaBr → 2 BrCN + 2 NaBr

Thanks

This is your first post on sciencemadness and we never heard of you and it is quite surprising that you start off with stuff like this. The great majority of newbies does not start with cyanides and certainly not with the insanely toxic cyanogen halides. I'm sure many people are willing to help you, but it would help us, if we knew a little bit more of you and what you like to do with BrCN.

Orlan, I have to agree with Woelen. Cyanogen halides are incredibly nasty to work with, especially amateurly. What safety equipment will you be using and do you know how to deal with a volatile cyanide? What will you do with it? The following link will give you a method which is tried, tested and works.

Be very careful with cyanogen bromide!

Post count has nothing to do with experience!

There are countless people on this forum who are post whores and know next to nothing about practical chemistry and vice-versa.

Smuv, you are totally right, but my point is that if someone comes in, has never been here before and the first thing he does is asking about nasties like CNBr, then it seems to me that it is quite normal that you ask a little more before going into details about such stuff. I am not telling that this person has no experience or that he is doing irresponsible or mad things, but let's just wait and see if he comes back on this.

You would certainly want to make sure that the person understood to safely deal with the product of the reaction.
