I know! Awesomeness! I just ordered two items which I have no real use for per-se but I see them as chemical collectibles ;)

5g Denatonium Saccharide (extremely/insanely bitter)
1g Nonivamide (synthetic variant of Capsaicin)

Of course as soon as these are received I will stupidly taste test a small dust particle of each for fun hehe

t-butanol! That would be wicked, Ive been searching for some for the longest time and cant find any through my usual supply companies :(

I guess because its spring im doing some spring chemical shopping because I ordered yet again, some are relatively basic things that I cant seem to find anywhere locally:

Malonic acid, 25g Reagent, : This is mainly for demos for friends lol, I am determined to show them the belousov zhabotinsky reaction!

Conc. NH4OH 500ml Reagent: Because these days household ammonia has became about as potent as watered down cat piss with perhaps some lemon perfume in it to make it even less useful for home chemistry.... I had to bite the bullet on this one... 28$ :(

Potassium Iodate 100g reagent: One of the uses will be for the belousov reaction, I know I can make iodate rather easily but im lazy ;) plus its a useful reagent

Conc HCl 500ml reagent: I must have 6 litres of hardware store muriatic, that being said I feel a bit silly paying so much for a small amount but I do need some HCl free of metal contamination for delicate experiments etc.

It annoyed me that I had to purchase reagent grade of this:

CAMPHOR ACS 100g for 15$- I am only 26 yrs old but I remember buying camphor blocks in almost every pharmacy, they were always in some infrequently used low traffic areas of the pharmacies, but they were there! I asked the pharmacist and she said that the company doesnt offer it anymore due to easier to use OTC creams and vapo rubs and god knows what else, of course. Then she told me to check the hardware store... I just came back home.

Also got an eyewash station, Corning PC-420D stir/hotplate (to replace my older PMC hotplate), various brushes, clearance kimax glassware, filter papers, ph papers, 1/4 lb of glass tubing, wash bottles pre-labelled for ethanol, methanol and isopropanol which I love! A second lab stand and some bossheads, glass funnel, claisen adapter and various adapters and a few other things I cant remember... feels like Christmas in April! minus my visa statement when it comes... :S

I'm not sure, nor am I sure I wan't to know . These were acquired mostly as numerous small orders, although most of the metals were from 2 orders and most of organic compounds (minus the solvents) were in one order, which totalled about $650, although that included shipping (which is always significant for reagents, esp. with hazmat items in different categories having to ship separately).

The total is dominated by the Troy oz. of rhodium sponge, which was about $1350, and required a bank wire transfer. Still, it was only $50 above the rhodium spot price at the time, and compared to the retail prices for relatively small amounts of rhodium compounds (or worse, rhodium-based organometallic catalysts), it seems like a good value. The rhodium is 99.995% pure and is very finely powdered, so it's in ideal condition as a starting material for chemical manipulation to produce one's own rhodium catalysts.

And, before anybody asks, no, I'm not interested in selling any rhodium, or any of my other chemicals, for that matter.

If you don't mind telling us, what's the appeal of the thallium? I guess I can understand if you're an element collector. Is that why? Other than for that purpose, I can't think of any reason why anybody would want that stuff. It's highly toxic, moreso than, say mercury, and is a persistent environmental hazard. I also can't think of any useful chemical properties of the metal or it's compounds that are unique to them and not substitutable by less toxic reagents.

Maybe I'm missing something that makes thallium appealing for more than the collector or the poison maker. If so, what is it?

Mailinmypocket - 31-7-2012 at 20:54

Purely for element collecting purposes, gallium source just started carrying it recently and I've always wanted a sample just for show :)

That's what I figured. Thinking back over all the old Organic Synthesis papers I've read, online or otherwise, lots of them utilized one or more highly toxic elements (or compounds of those elements), but I don't recall any that used thallium or thallium salts. It certainly wasn't because the authors feared it's toxicity. Some toxic elements are routinely employed: arsenic, selenium, mercury, lead, barium, nickel, hexavalent chromium, etc. Thallium just doesn't seem useful enough to overcome it's inherent dangers. It isn't useless - just search online and lots of chemical or metallurgical uses pop up. It just isn't that useful in the organic chemistry lab.

This reminds me that I forgot a few recent purchases:

100g ThO2
500g Th(NO3)4 * 4H20
50g Br

The nitrate I bought because I got such a good deal on it - a little over $50. If you search around for thorium salts, you'll see what I mean. The oxide, usually called thoria in old chemistry papers, is the more useful compound, IMHO.

Eliteforum - 1-8-2012 at 11:41

1kg yellow cake uranium.

liquidlightning - 2-8-2012 at 01:04

450g NaNO2, 99.6%
500ml 31.74& HCl, tech grade, yellow (need to distill it)
1000ml 30% H2SO4
500ml 30% H2O2
8 oz Drierite (calcium sulfate, cobalt chloride) Nice dessicant, turns red when wet, heat until blue to dry.

woelen - 3-8-2012 at 12:04

Maybe not really spectacular, but rare:

250 grams of sodium phosphite, Na2HPO3.5H2O

Phosphates and sodium hypophosphite are easy to obtain, but phosphite was very hard for me to find, but now I finally have some.

The stuff arrived today, if I have done interesting experiments with this, then I'll certainly add them to my website.

barley: where did you get your tungsten from?

Siggebo - 4-8-2012 at 06:47

I just ordered a pair of platinum electrodes - the school lab, rod variety usual with Pb, Cu and whatnot. Paid about 23 €, don't know if I made a mistake yet but they were on sale (50% :o) from a reliable supplier.

Also got 10 PE one-litre bottles for cheap while I was at it, and some lead strips.

barley81 - 4-8-2012 at 11:34

@Hexavalent,
The tungsten is from eBay. 200g cost me $20 shipped. You should be able to buy it (there are European sellers). It is used for adjusting the floppiness of dog ears (cruel use).

Hexavalent - 4-8-2012 at 11:49

Good value, but I have to agree about its use.

Just out of curiosity, do you know just how it does alter the floppiness of dog ears?

barley81 - 4-8-2012 at 11:50

It weighs them down. Typically the tungsten powder is attached using paraffin wax containing a small amount of iodine.

Yes I did and it cost me 40$ including shipping to Canada. It was really quite fast and well packaged. I also didn't get any trouble from customs which is always nice.

mr.crow - 16-10-2012 at 11:13

I see you found the 3kg NaOH bucket. There used to be an ebay seller in Quebec that had 250g batches of Iodine from a huge drum for sale.

I contacted the seller and there is some more left, but I am not sure about it because of Aus customs. Is the customs in Canada that strict, such as if they found it, it would be confiscated and destroyed, no questions asked, no asking for it back like it would be in Australia?

Fossil - 17-10-2012 at 12:33

I am pretty sure that if they had found it, it would not have been a big deal and would have still made it to my house. You should look into the customs regulations for Australia though.

tetrahedron - 17-10-2012 at 13:48

it has more to do with the shipping of dangerous goods than with their importation..customs/postal service work together at the hub where international mail enters, and they try to help each other out, to the disadvantage of the addressee

[Edited on 17-10-2012 by tetrahedron]

borrowedlawyer - 17-10-2012 at 13:54

This is from customs website:
'other chemicals and compounds that are an immediate precursor to a controlled chemical or compound.'
It is my understanding that iodine is not an IMMEDIATE precursor, it is a precursor to another precursor. So in theory I can import it, can anyone please shed some light on this matter?

sbbspartan - 18-10-2012 at 07:19

I just got...
1 lb magnesium turnings
500 ml of tertiary butyl alcohol
8 lb of potassium hydroxide
45 grams iodine

The tertiary butyl alcohol came from a guy on eBay, and was only $15 + $8 shipping. I got the potassium hydroxide from essentialdepot.com. It comes packaged in 4 2lb HDPE containers and was only $13 + $15 shipping, so $28 overall for 8 pounds. By the way, if you ever buy from this website, you can use the promotion code "EDPC10" to get 10% off everything. I got the magnesium a while ago for $15. Time to make some potassium. :)

My last chemicals are the following:

Pr6O11 (brown powder, dissolves easily in mineral acids)
Er2O3 (pink powder, dissolves in mineral acids, but very slowly, takes many days)
Na2S.xH2O (technical grade)

The Na2S.xH2O is rather impure, it is brown instead of colorless. It is, however, a very nice source for making pure H2S-gas in a convenient way.

I think we ordered the Pr6O11 from the same person if you got it on eBay, nice stuff and pretty cheap :) I even got a small unexpected "gift" from them- a small ampoule with 500 mg samarium!

kristofvagyok - 20-10-2012 at 12:04

Not a special thing but this week we got some solvents what looked like this:

Nearly 150 liter of acetone, a lot methanol, ethanol, hexane, dichloromethane ect. I just love Sigma Aldrich:D

Swede - 21-10-2012 at 13:32

25 grams of RuCl3 - 3H2O

Platinum group metals are expensive, but Ru is one of the lesser in terms of $$. I'd really love to get ahold of some palladium, platinum, and Iridium chlorides, but the $$ is challenging.

All are destined for electrochemistry experiments.

I also need to source some simple reagents like T-butanol, oxalic acid, and a couple of others to prepare some "paint & bake" electrochemical coatings.

Lots of oxalic acid on eBay and I recently got some t-BuOH from a Canadian supplier 500ml @24$+ shipping for reagent grade. I believe they ship to the USA. PM for supplier!

Just a heads up, it comes in a steel bottle with an inner cap(that you discard once removed) that is sort of like an inverted beer cap. It was a real bitch to get that out of the neck- had to use very small pliers to get a grip on it :S

I2 I think and more sulphuric acid perhaps? But I didn't ordered them as they are so basic chemicals here.
When I order something, then it means, it's very hard to make, very complex chemical or very dangerous or very expensive if made by myself or not avalaible on local stores. I mostly use Merck or Sigma-Aldrich for this.

hyfalcon - 26-10-2012 at 13:28

100lbs. KNO3
10lbs. MnO2-200 mesh
10lbs. Rutile-granular
10lbs. Illmenite-granular
10lbs. Illmenite-200mesh
10lbs. Porcelainite
10lbs. Fluorspar

After my next order that I'm getting ready to put in which will consist of some more 5 micron aluminum and some copper oxide, I'll be ready for some thermite experiments.

Oddly here in Canada you can get almost anything but since 9/11 you can't get things like KNO3 from suppliers... My supplier had a warning that comes up for a few of their chemicals stating that it is only available to schools and businesses. Thank god I have a couple kilos stock piled from years ago!

Here is the message:

RESTRICTED COMPONENTS REGULATIONS OF THE EXPLOSIVES ACT
XXXX Scientific is registered with the Explosives Regulatory Division of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
This chemical is available only to canadian schools and industries.
It is no longer available to private individuals.

Just got 10g of platinized asbestos in the mail today from a guy in Germany :D

mr.crow - 26-10-2012 at 19:43

Yeah that sucks. It happened fairly recently (around 2009) after some idiot muslim extremists tried blowing up the Toronto stock exchange.

Also, It really bugs my why potassium permanganate is restricted here. The best I could find is they don't want 55kg sacks being exported to Colombia to purify cocaine

Fossil - 27-10-2012 at 06:02

Go to the country (I was in northern Ontario) and look for a store that sells water purification products, they usually sell potassium permanganate to remove iron impurities from well water. The store that I went to sold 2.5kg tubs of the stuff for around 50$. I didn't buy any so I can't say anything on the purity, but it looked quite pure.

A local plumbing store sold me this for about 50$, I found it by googling "my city+potassium permanganate"

My latest restock

zenosx - 4-11-2012 at 19:43

This is from several different companies including local suppliers.

Some I just grabbed for the awesome prices they were offering with no immediate synthesis or use in mind (like acetic anhydride, I knew it was useful, but Didn't know it was a sched II precursor until After i received it... ), either way, I have offered family in the local sheriffs office to tour my lab anytime they please, to which they show no interest, unless it's blowing up gummy bears and the like, they love watching shit explode.... good thing I have no interest in explosive chemistry or they'd all be here wanting me to blow up something....Really sad when you think about it ....That is the Southern US for you...

Anyway, last orders came to~ this:

4oz Mercury Metal
2oz Chlorobenzene
4oz Acetic Anhydride
1oz Calcium Metal
4oz Activated Charcoal
1oz Citric Acid
4oz Diatomaceous Earth

Damned poison packs...

I got a little something today... Not extremely useful to me, but still cool :) it's a very nice vitamin c (ascorbic acid) indicator

Quartz tube!

Mailinmypocket - 13-11-2012 at 12:58

Not a chemical but sort of neat- a huge quartz tube! It was given to me by a friend who works at a chlorate/chlorite plant not far from here. They replaced these which are used to encapsulate sensors in the electrolysis reactors. I'm guessing it could be used as a test tube? :)

Quartz is neat stuff to be sure. I bought three boxes of tubing made by Heraeus sealed in plastic with specs on each tube enclosed in the plastic. It was used for making fiber optic cable. I couldn't resist because it was so cheap on ebay at the time.
There are these quartz "test tubes" for sale on eBay now, kind of nice too.

I can't believe I spent $200 on GL45 caps. The fancy fluropolymer ones.

I'm also sad VWR now requires a company name and contact

For storage of fuming acids and the like? There isn't much else (cap-wise) that will stand up to long-term storage.

My precious stash of conc. nitric is in a glass bottle with a fluoropolymer cap.

Got 1 gm of palladium chloride on the way plus some Tin (II) Chloride.

mr.crow - 22-11-2012 at 10:27

Yes, long term storage of nasty things!

Hopefully the sketchy web store actually works and sends my caps. Shipping was a huge ripoff, like usual from the States

I also bought Len1's book on amazon.ca. "Usually ships within 1 to 3 months" WTF?

Swede - 24-11-2012 at 06:47

Back when I was selling MMO anodes and shipping them from the USA worldwide, the shipping costs were extreme... I hope you understand it is the shipping companies that are ripping us all off, not the chemical companies. :)

The options were typically like this...

Private shipping companies - $25 to $50 and a week to 10 days
Postal services premium express mail - same deal
Surface shipments - $12, but 6 to 8 weeks!

So it's a no-win situation. Then, there's customs fees and sometimes customs confiscations, which the buyer sometimes blames on the shipper! Of course, in those cases, it's the country laws themselves which are at fault.

Re: the book, my guess is it is a print to order book.

1L of 50% HF in what seems to be an inappropriate bottle... Now I am debating disposing of it or rebottling it into something more suitable... Damn.

Don't dispose of it like that guy did with hydrazine :(. Try and find a polypropylene or Ryton (PPS) or Teflon container as they are suitable for storage according to a compatibility chart.

If you can't find one, convert it to a salt and ship it to me ;).

I just took it because the person was throwing it away, it's double contained. When I opened the first container I was greeted by a thick plastic bottle made of some sort of plastic that has a yellow tint to it, also it isn't the chemical suppliers bottle. The plastic seems very fragile, like I could fracture the bottle by squeezing it. Ill leave it as is until I buy a better bottle and a tube of calcium gluconate gel.

Just ordered some small volumes of,

aniline
formaldehyde
sulfuric acid
30% ammonium hydroxide soln.
toluene
and some new electrodes! :)

Can't wait for them to come! Finally have enough glass-ware to actually work on some fun synthesis projects.

Aniline! Nice! I'm looking for a source of it in Canada but it is proving to be difficult. I just bought a small cylinder of argon from BOC gases, still need to find an affordable regulator though.

smaerd - 30-11-2012 at 14:30

Will elemental scientific ship to Canada? It's pretty expensive from them(18$ for ~114g). Then again it sure beats making benzene, making nitric acid, nitrating and reducing. I'm sure some amateurs will disagree with that, but I'm content with saving my benzene for other E.A.S. reactions. Aniline opens a lot of synthetic door-ways really excited! I'm still waiting on getting an inert gas tank(probably go cheap and go for N2), I don't really need one yet, but it sure would be nice for some of the research projects I have in mind.

They ship to Canada but the price is ridiculous... I wouldn't mind paying their price for the chemical but if I remember correctly including shipping, a poison pack and something else but I forget what, it was going to be like 60 bucks for the smallest size :( screw that! I have benzene but I'd rather keep it for other projects.

Lambda-Eyde - 30-11-2012 at 15:01

Benzene can be easily made in ridiculous quantities. Anyone can get ahold of sodium benzoate and sodium hydroxide. In the mindset of a home chemist it is a "renewable" resource. I don't see why you'd want to "save" it. Make a liter and convert it to nitrobenzene, bromobenzene, chlorobenzene, alkylbenzenes and acylbenzenes... Then you're set!

Right now my current living situation makes it difficult to make benzene unfortunately. Living in the city with lots of snoop-a-holics on all three sides of my backyard makes me leery of doing it out there. Indoors is out of the question, some things I will do but distilling benzene? Hmmm nah! I'm "saving" the almost 1l I have because it is mallinckrodt reagent grade and was pretty damned expensive when I bought it. I'm not that pressed to get aniline anyways, although it would be nice :P

Also just got back from the "chemical store" in town and got:

4 litres glacial acetic - 21.99 CAD
4 litres 28% ammonia solution- 12.95 CAD
4 litres denatured EtOH - 18 CAD

The chemical store is like the candy shop for chemists!

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1311&...

Link for ebay search, first one only 2 bucks so far if you read this in 12 hours or less. Looks like several are around 50 bucks for what it's worth. Wondering if a Nitrogen regulator could be used. Seems like 3 to 4 thousand PSI maximum is typical for a tank of either gas.

Out of curiosity I searched for mercury metal, seems like you can no longer list it. Just a few years ago I saw it in many listings. Has ebay become a wasteland for much of our hobby? Getting impossible to find many things now which sucks as private parties getting rid of their lab supplies used to be great for bargains.

Try buying acetanilide. In the US at least, this is not considered hazardous for shipping, it is a solid, and it is rapidly hydrolyzed by warming with HCl and then basifying. The dark oil is then steam distilled, salted out, dried with NaOH or KOH, and vacuum distilled to water-clear aniline in good yield.

smaerd - 1-12-2012 at 04:52

Pretty sure aniline hydrochloride also gets around the hazardous shipping.

That sounds like a relatively easy method and an interesting process. I can get acetanilide on eBay - Thanks! Ill give it a try :)

IrC: I placed a bid on the first one, my cylinder is at 11,500kPa so that regulator can easily handle it. I was just a bit uncertain of buying those on eBay due to safety concerns but it looks fine. Still 12 hours on the bid though so we will see where it gets to.

IrC - 1-12-2012 at 13:20

Appears you have been outbid by half a buck with 6 hours to go. Looks like NOS just stored somewhere the box got a little roughed up. If you get it for under $40 you are still saving money.

mr.crow - 1-12-2012 at 20:17

Has anyone seen the eBay listing of 5 chemical bottles for $100? It was a pain in the butt to decode all the CAS numbers and all the good stuff appears to be gone. I did get a few good things out of it :)

Also, has anyone heard of http://www.erlenmeyers.com/? I ordered some super fancy GL45 bottle caps, but they haven't even processed the order yet >: ( thank gawd for paypal

Occasionally you'll see one chemical for sale on ebay, and the rest of the stuff junk. In this category I've: Nitroethane, propiophenone, and I believe 3-4-5 trimethoxy benzaldehyde>. That is a set up, and order any one of these, just realize you'll be scrutinized for at least 2 years, if not more.

all dea needs to do these days is place a CAM (short for a dedicated GC). If the cam smells the right smell, you will be scrutinized even further.

It's kind of queer (NOT that there is anything wrong with it) how different chemicals/API's are restricted or not depending on local. From what I understand, buying anti-histamines is very difficult in Au, as are Amino Acids. Go figure?!

In Germany, Melatonin is very watched, and can only be supplied by a physician for a 20 day supply, no refills.

Tramadol is culprit numero uno basically in the whole middle east. Strange.
