In chemistry, a nonmetal (or non-metal) is a chemical element that mostly lacks metallic attributes. In the periodic table there are 18 nonmetals (22 by older definition).

Nonmetals from the periodic table
- Group I: hydrogen (H)
- Group XIV: carbon (C)
- Group XV: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P)
- Group XVI: oxygen (O), sulfur(S), selenium (Se)
- Group XVII: fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br), iodine (I), astatine (At).
- Group XVIII: helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe), radon (Rn).
General properties
Out of the 18 nonmetals from the periodic table, 5 are solid, 1 is liquid and 11 are in the gaseous phase at standard conditions.
