Abstract: Methods of differencing the Eulerian form of the hydrodynamic
equations are investigated. One wishes to find a method for machine calculations
that could be used in hydrodynamic problems involving large distortions of
matter in two space dimensions. Boundaries between materials are to be carried
and moved through the fixed Eulerian mesh. Given a mesh at some time and with
proper boundary conditions, the problem will be to carry the values of the
quantities stored in each mesh point forward in time explicitly to a small time
delta-t later. The problem will first be discussed in one space dimension and
then for the case of two dimensions. This numerical method is for compressible
flow in the presence of shocks. The IBM Electronic Data Processing Machine, Type
7O4, was used for the numerical computations.
